I like Billy Idol. I'm more familiar with his work in the band Generation X than his solo work (though I do like some of his big singles).

Didn't until I saw him live later in his career. He was the highlight of the show (Neil Young's Bridge School Benefit, 2001)

Fabulous, OTT fun performer with some great fun songs. A delightfully dirty bill of health from the Doc.

GENERATION X were one of the best punk bands. They were brilliant. They mixed punk with other genres before anyone else.

Liking White Wedding wouldn't qualify me as a fan I guess. Rebel Yell is pretty good too.

Ramones had already laid down Punk Rock with Surfer and Rock "N" Roll beats et al almost 2 years before the Gen X debut. The Clash fused Punk with Reggae on their debut a year previously as well.

More a Generation X man than his solo stuff. Ready Steady Go is one of the truly great Punk Rock singles from the first British wave. I used to get the singles on coloured vinyl on day of release. King Rocker in bright orange, Ready Steady Go bright red, happy days. One sour note mind, Idol did get bottled off the stage at one gig here in Birmingham because he was miming He is still known as The Mime Artist here.

Yeah, but Gen X mixed punk with pop, heavy metal ("Youth Youth Youth") and glam rock (the entire "Valley of the Dolls" album). That was weird and groundbreaking. I would say that they were AMONG THE FIRST ONES to mix punk with other genres, totally. So we're both right.

I know he was assaulted by a Hell's Angel just for the sake of it?

Miming what? I know he was assaulted by a Hell's Angel just for the sake of it? Miming the gig, it was being played from a stereo system. Seems very weird. I know a different story, I've read it on many different sources --- and there was no miming involved. Just a Hell's Angel going berserk, and Idol being punched and pushed towards the drum-set, but then rising on his feet again and singing as nothing had happened.

Never heard anything about him being attacked by a biker? I think you are getting confused with a story you have heard which didn't involve miming, and one that did that you obviously don't know about. The miming incident wasn't some big news item, it just happened at a club here in Birmingham. He must have had a bad throat or something, 1978 I believe.
