I consider myself reasonably intelligent. I'm very quick witted and have perfect comedic timing. I "get" most stand up even if I don't personally find it funny I understand why some people would. That said this promo for Julio Torres HBO special makes no sense at all to me. Indulge me please and watch the promo.
I've asked several friends of different races, ages and sexual orientations to explain some of the "jokes" and they are all at a loss much as I am. Is it "meta"? Whatever that is. Is it that thing millennials love where cringe unfunny stuff makes the giggle? The millennials I queried didn't seem to think so. Is it a blonde headed gay latino thing maybe? Because I did ask a gay friend, a blonde friend and a latino friend but I don't have a friend who is all three.
Many posters here talk about how smart they are so hopefully someone can explain the alleged humor here. The laugh track oops I mean audience seems to think Julio is hilarious and I want to laugh too. Please help General Discussion board.
WHY IS THIS FUNNY?!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to say it's an experiment to see if laugh tracks can make people laugh at anything, especially things that aren't funny.

It was actually this video that gave me the idea. I mean, it's just not very believable that the audience isn't part of the "act." youtu.be/6ooUt9TwbLg

I mean, it's just not very believable that the audience isn't part of the "act." youtu.be/6ooUt9TwbLg That was kinda painful to watch. Nice catch that we never see the audience laughing we just hear them off camera. The guy writes for SNL and has a series on HBO with the equally unfunny Fred Armisen. What an odd world we live in Admin John. Hmmm I wonder if I made a video of me just saying stuff like "Apples make me gassy. Is that why the doctor stays away?" totally deadpan with a laugh track or my friends laughing off camera can I get a HBO show too?

Try a laugh track with something like "It's 12 o'clock," or "I put some gas in my car today."

I think what the admin guy said is the only explanation that makes sense. Without the laugh track it would be even worse than it already is.

WHY IS THIS FUNNY?!!!!!!!!!!I can't say I care for it, but I think it just might be an attempt at modern deadpan humour. Of course, I could be completely misinterpreting it. His humour is not entirely dissimilar to that of Richard Ayoade... not at I care much for his brand of humour either.

It's like Tom Green or Andy Kaufman humor. I don't know if there is a name for this style or genre of "humor", but someone will literally just say or do something (anything) that isn't funny, but treat it as if it's a funny act. It's crap. Garbage. It's like an inside joke, except not only an inside joke, but not actually a joke at all. This is what I'd lump that clip in with:
