Back in 1993 in England when two 10 going on 11 year old boys kidnapped a 3 year old boy then took him far away from a shopping center then murdered him, days later the two boys were arrested and the tabloids in the UK blamed Child's Play 3 for the murder but neither one saw the movie before the movie and only saw it after they did the murder.
It was totally ridiculous to blame a movie for the boy's actions on a horrific murder, entertainment shouldn't be blamed for real life violence especially that Dark Knight incident in Colorado 6 years ago, here is one of my most favorite quotes ever which was heard in Collider's magazine in 1949 and at the end of Creepshow 2 that sums things up well.
“Juvenile delinquency is the product of pent up frustrations, stored-up resentments and bottled-up fears. It is not the product of cartoons and captions. But the comics are a handy, obvious, uncomplicated scapegoat. If the adults who crusade against them would only get as steamed up over such basic causes of delinquency as parental ignorance, indifference, and cruelty, they might discover that comic books are no more a menace than Treasure Island or Jack the Giant Killer.”
— Colliers Magazine - 1949 and Creepshow 2.

If what we watch doesn't influence us, why is so much spent on tv advertising?
I haven't read enough about the studies into this, but I agree even if there is an effect, you can't use that to mitigate the guilt of the individual.
