Picante is 30¢ less yet both have the same ingrediments!
Their med. salsa:
INGREDIENTS: CRUSHED TOMATOES (WATER, CRUSHED TOMATO CONCENTRATE), JALAPENO PEPPERS, DICED TOMATOES IN TOMATO JUICE, ONIONS, DISTILLED VINEGAR, SALT, DEHYDRATED ONIONS, GARLIC, NATURAL FLAVORING.
Their med. picante sauce:
INGREDIENTS: CRUSHED TOMATOES (WATER, CRUSHED TOMATO CONCENTRATE), WATER, JALAPENO PEPPERS, ONIONS, DISTILLED VINEGAR, DEHYDRATED ONIONS, SALT, GARLIC, NATURAL FLAVORING.
So to save a few pennies I always go for the picante.

I recently bought some picante sauce to confirm what I read somewhere when looking for an explanation myself......that picante SAUCE is just that, meaning that it's (basically) sauce, rather than sauce with chunks of stuff (tomatoes, etc.) in it. And that's pretty much what it is.....while it's not JUST sauce, and does still have some chunks of tomato in it, it DEFINITELY is more liquid, and MUCH less "chunky". I'm guessing that's the reason it's less expensive......simply because there's less "stuff" in it. Personally, I like that, but I could easily see where others wouldn't......in other words, that they like their sauce less 'soupy', and prefer it more 'chunky'. If that sounds good to you, try it....but if a 'soupier' sauce is not your cup of tea, then you might want to pass !! SAVE FERRIS

You might save even more if you go with the store brand.

I grew up with Pace when it was still an independent company (pre-Campbell Soup buyout), and all they offered was the picante sauce. The "hot" flavor was super hot and it seems like it was tamed down once Campbell's bought them out. My grandfather used to use it with his bloody mary's.
When the salsa first came out it actually had added sugar in it, but eventually they took that out. Now it's just chunkier than the regular picante sauce.
I still buy the Pace "hot" picante sauce. It's one of the better ones out there, although Clint's is pretty good.

Yeah, I've tried a few different salsas and except for my homemade, which for the most part I am too lazy or busy to make it when I have so many other things to put together, I do like the picante sauce the best or over them. As demos points out, I do prefer sauce over chunky.

If you don't like this on your huevos y frijoles negros, you're at least a Commie sympathizer and a lunatic.

It's just wording, and labeling.
Piquant is the French adjective "spicy."
Salsa is the Spanish noun "sauce."

Honestly, you can probably make your own, it'll even work out to be cheaper than buying one in the jars. Most of the spices people have in their kitchens already and you can skip the dehydrated onion and either use a real onion, or onion powder. It's super duper easy, especially if you have a blender, cuisinart or similar device.
