Because Der Spiegel has been well-known for publishing fiction.
Have any of you actually read the Spiegel article, or are you passing judgement based on Daily Fail?

He was accused of rape soon after he moved to Manchester as well.
Of course, I don't know the details of either case, but if a man gets accused of something like this more than once then that is either really bad luck or something is going on. I'm guessing the policy for clubs like Man United and Real Madrid is to settle, and settle quickly and quietly with binding gagging orders. This is problematic for a number of reasons. On the one hand it encourages false claims. On the other hand a guilty man wont face the full weight of the law.
In America, they changed the law so Michael Jackson couldn't settle out of court the second time he was accused of being a child molester, that law should probably be in place for all sex assault cases.

Someone on reddit kindly took the trouble and translated the majority of the article.

We can expect it from 1970s TV icons, but from a current star? The most famous footballer in the world? No, today's celebs are cut from a different cloth. Surely? Like Michael Jackson, we will never know the truth for sure. But you definitely wouldn't leave him alone with your daughter.

It's very unlikely that a magazine like Der Spiegel (the printed edition) would keep five journalists busy for weeks to just make up a story like that. It's a political publication mainly, and one of the most reputable in the world. The allegations that Der Spiegel came up with this story in a matter of days because Bayern lost to Madrid are ludicrous. They are based in Hamburg, they are a political magazine, they have no ties with FC Bayern nor are they known to be particularly supportive to the club. It takes longer than three days to put together an article like this. These accusations have me wondering how journalism works in some countries.
It's probably safe to say that Der Spiegel really is in possession of the paperwork they claim to have. Unless they fell for a heap of faked papers, the pay-off did happen. It's the part about whether or not the woman was raped, as she claims, that is up to debate.

Why did he pay over $300.000? A lot money for nothing.

The sad thing is if this is true; one day he will do it again. You would hope he doesn't, but if he does I hope the woman is strong enough to come forward and tell it to a court room. Tough ask I know, especially with a carrot being waved in front of you urging you to keep quiet and no guarantee he will even be found guilty. But he has to be stopped.
He has always been close to the top of my list of most unlikeable footballers, never quite top, but close.
