Episode 4 - 'Avalanche' has been my favourite so far. The riffing gets merciless early on and just keeps building. They seem to have a large writers staff for this new season I would be curious to see who the core writers are for each episode. I did hear something about Dan Harmon taking a pass at a few of the new episodes, but I haven't noticed his name in the credits yet. MST3K seems like a natural fit for him I loved the bit on the animals/natural disaster movies.

Overall, I'm happy with the revival.
It keeps the lighthearted tone of the original series and feels like a natural continuation rather than just some new guys using the same puppets. It doesn't come off as pandering to nostalgia-- it just feels like more MST3k. Which is great! The world definitely needs more MST3k and if you were a fan, you'll feel right at home watching it. There are only two main issues I have with the show, currently: 1.) The riffs are too crowded and quick and 2.) Jonah and the bots haven't found their identity yet.
It seems like they want to get as many jokes out as possible as quickly as possible and that could be the result of having too many writers and not enough editors. It's important to let the movie breathe a bit in places and let the riffs flow naturally (or to have the audience feel like they are) but this season has a rapid fire pace that throws everything at the wall and hopes something sticks. It's not as mellow as the old MST3k, even in the later seasons, and I think that's a misstep. I think they need to dial it back a bit.
Jonah and the bots also haven't really defined themselves as characters and that's a very important aspect of MST3k. They just sort of blend together and don't have any notable identity. Since MST3k is supposed to be like watching a bad movie with your friends, it's important that they each stand out and have their own distinctive style and flair and approach to the commentary.
Aside from these problems, it's great to see my favorite show back. It puts a big fat smile on my face.
