My parents had a Gravenstein apple tree, in their backyard.
Even on a very warm day, the aroma of the ripe apples was lovely. When they were being cooked, or baked, it was very heady stuff.

My favorite apple is the Jonathan, and I haven't seen one in many many years. There is one called the Jonagold, which is OK but not the Jonathan.

I loved Jonathan apples, they were a smaller apple and most stores sold them in bags. I haven't seen just plain old Jonathan apples in years. I guess they aren't fancy enough. Guess we're getting old suzi and a lot of our favorites are disappearing.

They used to come out around Halloween, so I got my fair share in my trick or treat bags.

That is my fave as well Suzi, it is not sold in shops anymore, sadly. When I was a kid my parents had THE best Jonathon apple tree in the backyard yielding the sweetest ( with a hint of tart) biggest reddest juiciest apples, and they were divine. We also had a Grannie Smith tree which was also good and bizarrely enough, I married a man whose grandparents lived in the same street as the real original Granny Smith in Ryde New South Wales and his Mum and her six brothers used to pinch her apples!

Have an orchard and put away so much applesauce (canned) and apple pies (frozen). Pick the too bruised windfalls up by the wheelbarrow load. Learned NOT to dump them in the ditch along the road β¦ deer like to munch on them there so they go on a safer place along the fenceline. Turkeys and pheasants like them come winter.
Refuse it buy any in the store.

MacIntosh, JerseyMacs, Yellow Transparent, Dolgo crab (great for jelly), Duchess (hate those β¦ blah and they litter the lawn ), Melba, several others without names and some I would have to check the chart to identify. Also Italian Plums, gooseberries, red currants, a couple of forgotten name grapes, red and yellow raspberries (summer and everbearing with a crop mid spring and fall), rhubarb, sour cherry I think that's about all gozand elderberries but just the birds eat those.

Wow, lucky you. We had an orchard when I was a kid and I loved it. Still love my garden and vege/herb patch though it is more tropical now where I live.
