How many times has this been remade now? This is one of those things I have to wonder how many times they can remake it doing the same thing over and over again.

How many times has this been remade now? This is one of those things I have to wonder how many times they can remake it doing the same thing over and over again. Well there have been 2 films and 1 TV series loosely based on the book. All set in contemporary America. There was a 2005 film set in Victorian England which apparentley is abysmal. This is the first production of any budget to be a proper adaptation of the book and set in Victorian England.

Well, the fact that it has Eleanor Tomlinson from Poldark in it would be reason enough for me to check this out. Looks like she's been keeping busy since Poldark finished (we'll be getting the final episode here on Saturday), between this mini-series and starring in Joss Whedon's new show. It's also good to see Robert Carlyle playing something other than Rumpelstiltskin from Once Upon A Time. How many times has this been remade now? And that's^ another reason why I'm actually interested in this version (I wasn't fond of the 2005 Tom Cruise one either).

I'll give it a try. I hope it's better than the other adaptations.

I liked the short that was done where they had black and white footage of an alien being examined in a 19th century medical room. I cant recall if it was fan-made or done for a tv show. There was also a documentary on the book from the mid 90s narrated by Donald Sutherland which used WW 1 footage and added tripods in via primitive cgi.
I am expecting them to crank up the SJW factor in this though like they did with Dracula (giving Jonathan Harker syphilis and making Van Helsing an illegal immigrant--I mean--fuck off with the insincere proselytizing).

What version was that? The story has often been cited as a metaphor for both the fear of venereal disease and fear of immigrants.

But the original story-Dracula is definitely evil and the men are defending the society from him. The Hammer versions were always about the Dracula character as evil. But since the late 70s he has been re-interpreted as a romantic hero and rarely presented as a dangerous foreign force (Blacula, the Monster Squad).

I've always wanted a good adaption of War of the Worlds that was set in the original time and setting, so I'm delighted to be getting this. It does seem to be a pretty loose adaption of the story though, so I just hope it's good!

I thought it was pretty good.
It's not really about The War of the Worlds. It's about a couple, and their odyssey, and fight for survival during the War of the Worlds.
Eleanor Tomlinson was terrific. I was riveted to the TV everytime she was on screen.
I had a couple of minor complaints.
SPOILERS; The Martian creatures didn't seem evolved enough to be able to create or operate the technology they used to travel to the Earth. Or declare war on the Earth.
The Martian creatures seemed slow, and easy to run away from. Or even injure or kill with a weapon. When George and his brother were killed, it appeared both could have easily just run away. Instead of just standing there and allowing themselves to be killed.
I'm watching the EPIX War of the Worlds version right now. It's really slow at times. This BBC version is not fast paced. But it's faster than the EPIX version.
Half the EPIX version is in French. If you don't have closed captioning, (or speak French) you'll miss half the show. (The program I'm watching it on doesn't have closed captioning.)

I did watch it in the beginning of January, it was not bad, but i found it a bit boring. Eleanor Tomlinson was good in it, but i did not buy her and Rafe Spall as a couple as i did not think they had any chemistry.

But Eleanore Tomlinson was terrific.

REPLY #2 They spent too much time with the post-war segments looking at the Eleanore Tomlinson character just looking miserable, depressed and hopeless. Those parts moved really slowly.

I agree they could have skipped that or at least have less of it.
