Always loved the Su-25. It's simple, robust, easy and cheap to operate. In fact I've long though that it's exactly the sort of plane the west should have been using in the wars of the last couple of decades. Sending an F-35 to bomb some guy on a camel is kind of ridiculous.
And whilst the A-10 is a super impressive aircraft in many ways, honestly I think it's rather overrated. I suspect much of the adoration it gets stems from how "cool" it is.

I suspect much of the adoration it gets stems from how "cool" it is. Su-25 is a way smaller target. This got me thinking about the A-10 and why I don't like it that much. One thing I've heard is that it's pretty slow. Yes, you don't need a Warp Speed death machine for CAS, but at the same time a slow plane means a long time between calling for help and getting that help. I gather the A-10 units spend a lot of time having aircraft loiter near expected trouble spots to try and avoid this, but that means a lot of wasted flight time - and you can't have them hanging out everywhere, so you'd best hope the trouble comes near where you expected it to be. The other thing is that the gun bothers me some. If what you're trying to do is plink Russian MBTs back in the day that's great, but if you're doing general CAS against people whose idea of a heavy weapon is a 20mm mounted on the back of a Toyota, you don't need the big gun to take it out. And in these days of missiles like Brimstone, which are (a) seriously good at hitting and killing things up to and including tanks and (b) can be carried in numbers (a single Typhoon can carry eighteen Brimstone on top of the air-to-air armament), I question the need for a CAS aircraft to be lugging around a gun system that weighs 1.8 metric tons, whose ammo drum is the size of a small car. But hey, the gun is super cool. It looks awesome on youtube. So it therefore must be the greatest thing ever, and any CAS aircraft that has it must absolutely be the best.
