7/10 - Decent movie, but it wasn't as awesome as I thought it was going to be.

It's a good movie for most of it, not as compelling as I expected, but this one scene, brilliantly acted by Jose Ferrer, is the best reason to watch it.

6/10 - It's interesting for a 1950s movie how it picks away at establishment traditions--the young guy dislikes the ship he is on at first because it is so sloppy--so he ends up with Bogart who is better but apparently crazy (the idea of the career soldier or cop being in the wrong career builds up through the next decade). Then he is happy to get the old captain back--simple message, he needs to loosen up. Ditto with his attitude about who he marriages (this rebukes the "good blood" traditions going back centuries). Bigger message--who needs a strong military?
In the case of Fred MacMurray he is also a fall guy of sorts--he is intelligent but disinterested in military service--the opposite of Van Johnson who is the limited education career navy man. That MacMurray's character is the architect schemer, and the moral compass of the story is the lawyer--that really flies in the face of tradition (Shakespeare's "let's kill all the lawyers").

It's from the Pulitzer Prize winning 1951 novel by Herman Wouk, and much of it is autobiographical. It was the NY Times best seller for 48 total weeks.

Curious but … why this low rating ? If i remember right it was doing ok until they got to the courtroom and from then on it was disappointing.

I don't remember enough to answer that, I probably didn't find it realistic or the acting particularly convincing. As a mutiny film i prefer something like Crimson Tide and i probably rate films those viewers don't like higher i suppose.

8/10
Bogart was great as always, but the supporting cast was fantastic as well. The scene at the end where Fred MacMurray gets his comeuppance made the movie for me.
