Wasn’t John Carpenter’s Starman a romance? It is by no means a traditional romance though. It is very much a John Carpenter movie.

Ah, thanks. Even the music is very Carpenter-y. It's like a sci-fi, romance, thriller hybrid.

If they have at least have passion for the material and can work well with actors and the camera, then the chances should be good for coming up with something at least decent. What they lack in experience with the material they can make up for in other ways.

I don't think anyone would imagine David Cronenberg directing a period piece like a dangerous method (2011) back in the 1980s - though dead ringers (1988) was a definite turning point. He seems to have abandoned horror in the 21st century.

From a commercial standpoint, probably not a good idea. Horror is a bit different from rom com and drama in that it is a very niche market. Directors that start out in the genre and work at it long often build a fan base of horror fans (people like Craven, Carpenter, and Romero come to mind). Because of that going outside your market usually isn't a good idea because of they've essentially branded themselves(Craven and his film Music of the Heart comes to mind). Of course there are exceptions (Gillermo and Raimi come to mind). Contrast that with someone like Kubrick, who didn't make a horror film until well after he built his reputation and made the highly successful "The Shining". It's easier for a non-horror director to succeed in horror than a horror director to succeed in non-horror is what I'm basically saying.

It took Craven years to be given a chance with Music of the Heart. I heard it's not that great, but it did garner Meryl Streep her 48th Oscar nomination. But yeah, seems hard to escape that genre once they're in it.
It also depends on what constitutes a "director of horror". Would someone like Polanski count? He did Repulsion and Rosemary's Baby before he did Chinatown.

A good director can make a good movie in any genre, a few examples being David Gordon Green and Danny Boyle.
