Metallica - likely because I was exposed to Metallica's music first.
I have downloaded a couple of Slayer's songs on iTunes - namely Seasons in The Abyss and Raining Blood.
One concert back in the early 90s would have been a headbanger's dream come true:
Metallica (or Megadeth - can't remember) Anthrax Slayer
Joker's Wilde

Megadeth > Metallica > Testament > Slayer > Anthrax How you rank Exodus amongst them?

Megadeth > Metallica > Testament > Slayer > Anthrax How you rank Exodus amongst them? I only heard a few of their albums many years ago when I was really into thrash, so I'd have a hard time definitively ranking them. These days, thrash is among my least favorite metal genres... perhaps as a combination of getting burnt out on it and the fact that most interesting metal bands of the last 20-30 years have been in other sub-genres. I would, however, put Kreater about even with Slayer, and Destruction/Sodom both a bit behind (but in front of Anthrax).

Slayer by far.
Seen them 4 times in concert.
I used to be king of the mosh-pit.

Joker's Wilde 'Clash of the Titans'. It was Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. My first ever concert!

I'm going to have to go with Metallica.
I do enjoy Slayer and they do what they do very well, but I ultimately choose Metallica because they just have more variety to their music. They're great at doing thrash, hard rockers, ballads and they push themselves by trying new sounds like with the Load/ReLoad albums, Garage Inc., playing with the SF Orchestra on the S&M albums, Lulu w/Lou Reed, acoustic appearances, etc. Maybe all the fans don't care for those albums, but you can't accuse them of playing it safe.
Slayer are great at what they do, but let's face it every song is about either death, Satan/or Hell, warfare, murder, serial killers, anti-religion and violence. You just have to be in a specific mood for their music, I feel.
Also, for me, a band's front person makes all the difference. Tom Araya's fine at what he does and it suits Slayer's music, but he doesn't have much range beyond screaming a lot or less. James Hetfield at least makes attempts to sing on their post-And Justice For All material and he's got a charismatic presence to boot.

I'm going with Metallica.
Still happy that I got to see Slayer on their last tour.
