As a style and/or a genre (whichever or both), screwball comedy may be nearly as hard to nail down as film noir. Observers can pretty much claim it where they find it. Or not. . . . . And that kinda rhymes with "essay," which I've done again without having any such intentions. It just sort of snowballed, like the complications in a screwball comedy. But without the laughs. I always love your "essays", doghouse. Beautifully expressed, as usual, and I think you've made a powerful argument with this one. Thanks so much.

I am never entirely sure what makes a comedy a screwball rather than just a comedy. I think some of my favourite comedies that may be screwballs are: Easy Living Ever Since Eve the Ex Mrs Bradford Goodbye Again Good Girls Go To Paris the Goose and the Gander Love on the Run the Mad Miss Manton Midnight Too Many Husbands true Confession

RE: Sullivan's Travels am voting for Not a screwball comedy. It's just too serious and only the beginning is even remotely "screwballish". a MODERN Screwball classic (imo) is
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on SULLIVAN'S TRAVELS, bat. You are not alone though; I believe pimpinainteasy agrees with you. As for PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES, I've never seen it, but I can't tell you how many people have recommended it to me. I really should take the time to watch it.
You simply must watch this movie, spiderwort, if at all possible, as I believe the people recommending it have your best interests at heart. It's an emotional rollercoaster, painful at times, but there's nothing like it. Also recommended : 'The Great Outdoors' (1988) & 'Uncle Buck' (1989).

The Palm Beach Story. Classic. The Ale and Quail Club. The Weenie King. The Weenie King brings laugh tears to my eyes One that doesn't get enough love is Larceny, Inc. I guess because you don't associate Edward G. Robinson with screwball comedies. EGR plays a paroled crook who want to rob a bank. He buys a luggage store next to the bank with the idea of tunneling through the stores basement to get to the bank vault. But the luggage store becomes a success, even though it's the last thing he wants (they have to stop tunneling if a customer shows up. The movie is hilarious. IMDb changed the title to the Night Before Christmas. Dopey. www.imdb.com/title/tt0034965/
