I'm not a fan of these films but the money they generate hopefully allows for smaller productions to get greenlit. There are films for everyone. In the 1940s, for every Citizen Kane there were probably 100 Westerns being made. Many actors/directors have a "one for me, one for the studio" pattern to their films. We can take comfort in knowing that for every Marvel-type of film that's made we've possibly got another Citizen Kane-type of film on the horizon from an actor/director if they follow the pattern.

I took a music composition course in college. I remember having a discussion with the teaching assistant about an organ concerto he was writing. He was really annoyed that there are a lot of people who don't appreciate how much harder it is to do that kind of composing than it is to write pop songs like Elton John writes. A lot of people think someone like Elton John is a genius, in terms of his compositional abilities, when he's not really.

A lot of people think someone like Elton John is a genius, in terms of his compositional abilities, when he's not really. I've had the opposite experience, repeatedly. And having learnt piano for many years, I took a music composition course and found they frowned upon Elton John 100%, and despised all things pop with a passion rare to man.

I'm not shocked. Marvel fans have never been able to take criticism.

It's not just these two or the MCU. James Cameron popped up awhile ago saying the same thing about Wonder Woman, suggesting it was fake feminist and Sara Connor's a real female hero character. It all smells like the same thing, directors who've left an indelible legacy but also seem afraid of being forgotten. I know how James Cameron sounded like when he called out Wonder Woman: jealous. Triggered even. Coppola sounds the same. He doesn't sound bitter because he doesn't like the films, he sounds bitter because he's trashing them while accepting an award. That's what you do when you have an answer but not platform, you make one. He's telling a bunch of reporters he doesn't like the Marvel movies because it's the only floor he has.
I think they are elitist, which defeats the purpose of making people happy. Has anyone ever read director's shooting on each other? If it's not praise, it's the opposite and dripping with arrogance. If there's no balance between high art and entertainment, you'll rot your brain. I couldn't even eat my favorite food every day. At some point, film goers need palate cleansers because watching only blockbuster entertainment is just as damaging as only watching auteur movies: no variety. Variety is the spice of life and the MCU account for 22 films out of how many millions?
Scorsese at least said he doesn't watch the Marvel movies, which is a lot better than calling them despicable. They range from good to really good but they're popcorn entertainment. Francis Ford Coppola felt he had to come down from the mountain in Fantasia to say we're expected to learn something and gain something. Maybe he hasn't, but a lot of other people have. His experiences and his emotions aren't everybody else' no matter how much he thinks they should be. He says he doesn't know anybody who gets anything from watching the same movie over and over. He sounds like a blockhead. How many times has the question come up on this board what's your favorite movie to watch over and over? Anybody here who's seen the Godfather only watched it just once? It's on TV all the time. I've seen Goodfellas so many times I could watch it with the sound off, which I've done at the gym a few times because it's always on TV too.
As always, I would say this directly to him. I understand everything he's saying, and I'm as sure as I am of my own first name his expectations of fans are unreasonable. I'm as sure as I am the day is long the effort actors and directors put into the Marvel movies is sincere as his own. Art is subjective. Getting off his high horse may be a good place to start remembering that.
That's my rebuttal. I actually think it's a good conversation.

I'm not shocked. Marvel fans have never been able to take criticism. What fanbase of a popular movie franchise takes criticism well?
