If you can get a soundbite from Michael Caine (even just a funny comment) then I would assemble a narrative summary of all the twists and turns and go to NPR with it. This American Life might be interested. PrimeMover, I never got a response back from Michael Caine (not that I really expected one, unfortunately), but I just e-mailed This American Life with the story pitch. Will let you know when/how they respond.

Who will play you in the movie? I think No Morpho, Only Bánh mì proposed Jason Isaac or Mark Strong as me, and @retuenofmoviefreak had Timothy Dalton as me. But I’ve some kind of an aversion to picking who’d play me.

I’ve got a new candidate for the singer, too: David Kernan, who sang Berlin, Coward, Sondheim, and Porter and acted in the ‘60s. He’s the right age (born ’38), and the voice is close, very close—not an identical match, perhaps, but still close. And he was working for Paramount (which distributed Sleuth) in ’74.He’s still alive, too. If I can find an e-mail, I may e-mail him to ask for his thoughts, even if he’s not the singer.

You're so thorough in your Sleuth sleuthing, you've probably already seen this, but here's an hour of Kernan doing Cole Porter (with Elizabeth Welch and Karen Morrow) in 1980: If not, it'll be a time-killer as you wait to the tick, tick, tock of the stately clock, and a voice within you keeps repeating, "Who, who, who?"

Excellent, Doghouse6 ! No, I hadn’t seen that, but I’m a big Porter fan, so it’s a great find even if the singer doesn’t end up being Kernan. Many thanks.

NalkarjDK sure sounds A LOT like you know who.... add a tad of that "old recording scratchiness" and just maybe the National Nightmare of Not Knowing will be over at long last ! and then what shall we do for amusement ?

I know, right? I’m surprised that DK is that close, but close he is. The idea of actually solving this thing at long last, though… Wow. For amusement? Columbo, maybe? And Doghouse’s All About Eve mystery? And all my time will be taken up with the definitive guide about the Sleuth case, too! Still trying to track down a Kernan e-mail. I was going to say it was an example of the universe’s fine sense of irony that, if Kernan’s the singer, I should find him just after finally e-mailing This American Life. But then I thought that, if so, it’d actually be a capper to their story!

I quite hope it turns out to be him (he?), not least for the obvious "Eureka" reason, but also because he's still living and, odd as this may sound, because he looks like it should be he (him?); he's as close to the picture always conjured through my mind's eye.

He was also in Zulu with Michael Caine.
If anyone has any advice on finding contact information, I’d appreciate it—I can’t find anything anywhere. I even registered for a free-within-30-days IMDb Pro trial, but there’s not a scrap of info there (so I just as quickly cancelled that registration).

Strike the piece above. Not sure why I thought Paramount distributed Sleuth, but either way it was Fox.

IMDb Pro did give me something, though—the name of someone else still alive who worked on Sleuth, Elaine Schreyeck, who was the continuity girl. I’ll try to find an e-mail for her too just in case.
Infuriatingly, though, we get the name of the caterer—the caterer—but still not the singer! Errrrrrrrrr…

I still can’t find anything for Kernan, but I’ve just reached out to the Artists’ Partnership, which represents many actors with whom he’s co-starred. Hope that does something…
