A-
One of the greatest upon multiple re-watches ever (in league with 2001 ASO, Blade Runner, & Citizen Kane).
SPOILERS as titled, because a discussion about Vertigo is nearly impossible without...
I used to think maybe Judy was fake 'Madeleine' on the lam, dressing down to hide in San Fran... when it's real Judy who dressed up as 'Madeleine'. That was when I was younger & the film was quite a blur to get into, let alone follow.
Sight & Sound picked it #1 most recently, for me it wouldn't make my top 150. Quite spread nearly too thin, & the characters boiled down aren't very redeemable - namely why is John so perversely hounding stranger Judy to do his bidding, while Judy goes along not only with aiding & abetting a faked suicide. The 3 of them with Gavin are each flawed & greasy ppl.
The DVD I have (2 disc SE) there's a Novak line she loved the script because it was like the story of her career - being dolled up to be someone she wasn't. Hitchcock was pretty brave I think to put this subject matter out in the wide open, not least his own temptations & having to realize reality for what it is.
re. S&S's #1 'Commenting upon the 2012 results, the magazine's editor Nick James said that Vertigo was "the ultimate critics' film. It is a dream-like film about people who are not sure who they are but who are busy reconstructing themselves and each other to fit a kind of cinema ideal of the ideal soul-mate."'(wikipedia) That's not quite enough for me ty.

9/10. One of the greatest films of all time. It does require multiple viewings though.

9/10. One of the greatest films of all time. It does require multiple viewings though. The thing about multiple viewings is how mindblowing even that can be. Finally wrapping my head around it all after 4-5 viewings & analysis.

9/10. One of the greatest films of all time. It does require multiple viewings though. I agree except not that it requires multiple viewings. Multiple viewings of it are enjoyable but Vertigo is not one of those kinds of movies, like The Usual Suspects (also a great movie), for instance.

Love this movie!! The time he spends in a mental hospital is fascinating to me because I think he's suffering from shell shock more than melancholia (or whatever). I think he doesn't really know what's going on until he is ready for release at some point later in the film. He does this well, along with his love for Madeleine. 10/10

5. The pacing is way too slow, Jimmy Stewart is way too old and the story is kind of boring (at least, nothing much happens).

7/10 I'm still confused as to why this movie is always so highly rated. I guess it's all about tastes etc, but personally it wouldn't even come into my top 5 Hitchcock films

7/10. Well made but the letter and ending bug me.
I can understand the letter scene in order to build suspense, and to make his increasingly crazy behavior at least easier to understand--and why she was going along with his controlling behavior, but the ending was a little too over the top (literally over the top and down down down).

Meh - 6/10. With both Vertigo and especially Rear Window, I found Jimmy Stewart's constant yammering to be annoying. And I like him in other movies.
