I hate it as a Cardinals hater. Jose Martinez didn't fit in anywhere on that team since he can't play defense so being able to get a top 100 prospect and one of the better lefties at that is annoying to me. I know nothing about Arozarena other than my Dad who is a Cardinals fan telling me he was going to get a chance in spring training to crack the squad.

What's your opinion to what happens to each now. BoSox hold onto Betts? Cubs hold onto Bryant? My understanding was that both clubs were looking to cut costs - now that they have deals in place - this makes them a lot easier to deal now correct? I want Bryant - that being said - I want Betts too

This was just to avoid arbitration.

I thought now that he's inked - Bryant's 'service time agreement' hearing was coming up (separate from this) - there was just a scroll on this on ESPN too. If he wins - he becomes a FA after 2020. If he loses - he becomes a FA after 2021. I think if he wins this - Cubs are more likely to deal him either before the season or at trade deadline. If he loses - Cubs still have another year to get something for him (I just can't see him re-signing after all this drama) GO GET HIM PHILS.

I'm not sure what Bryant's grievance is. Don't a lot (practically all) teams do this to gain 1 extra year of control over a player? Yes - some can say it's dirty a bit but it's business. Kid may be ready but you send him back down for a short period of time so you can control him for one more year. Phils shocked everybody a couple of years back. Scott Kingery had an awesome Spring Training - everybody around here was sure they were going to do the same thing - send him down before opening day - they shocked everybody and gave the kid a contract right off the bat showing appreciation to him. It was a classy move - not sure if it was good business though. Maybe it was showing FAs out there and other players - this is a team who cares about their players and who you want to play for. I (as well as everyone around here) was kind of shocked they did it.

Just to piggyback on my last response - Maybe his grievance is he was called up 10 days later. I was under the impression - the way the rule worked - he couldn't be called up until July if he was sent down in order for them to gain 1 more year of control over him (but I may have the rule wrong) Anywho - I hope he wins - I think the Cubs trade him prior to the season starts then just to wash their hands with him - if they trade him at the deadline - could be an ugly relationship around the clubhouse.

I think it used to be July, then I thought it was May 1st. Either way this seems it was early/mid April. I don't know how the rule works anymore.

Side with the players completely with this.

Side with the players completely with this. I mean, I hear where the players are coming from, but this practice is allowed under the CBA. The Braves did it with Acuna last year, Mets did it with Syndergaard, I bet every team has done it over the past few years. Tough to call the Cubs assholes when they did something permissible, even if itβs a stupid rule (which is a separate argument). The players will have their chance to clean this up in the next CBA go round, but until then theyβll just have to enjoy their fully guaranteed contracts that pay them even if they are awful or get hurt and miss several years.
