ominous purchases?
I know we run across the occasional case where someone disappears, and it turns out a key suspect had been buying rope and duct tape the day before, or shovels and cement mix the day after the disappearance. What cases stand out in your memory for such incriminating clues?
The one that comes to mind for me is the still unresolved disappearance of Relisha Rudd. If there is interest I could do a full post just on her since it’s been about a year since the last one here, but I’ll give the brief details of this case in the context of my topic.

Relisha Rudd was an 8yr old African-American girl who in 2014 was living with her mother in a family homeless shelter in a decrepit former hospital in Washington DC. A janitor at the shelter was Khalil Tatum, who was known for breaking shelter policy by fraternizing with guests, particularly mothers of young girls. Also Tatum shouldn’t have been working there because of his felony record that HR had missed.
Tatum befriended the mother, and bought her and Relisha gifts, then offered to take Relisha out on excursions in town, then later back to his family’s home overnight, with her mother’s permission. When she suddenly stopped attending school and questions were raised, her mother sent the school a note saying Relisha was having health problems and was in the care of one “Dr Tatum.” The school after weeks of this and trying to reach “Dr Tatum” at the number given (the shelter’s number) reached him and set up a meeting, then called the police when he failed to show. At this point Relisha hasn’t been in school for a month, and Tatum had disappeared.
Police investigation showed that the last sighting of Relisha was almost three weeks prior, when on several different nights she’d been caught on CCTV footage entering hotel rooms in the area with Tatum. As the investigation kicked into high gear over this endangered child, Tatum’s wife was found shot in the head in a local hotel.
Over a week later, Tatum was finally found, dead of an apparent suicide in a massive park within DC. Relisha has never been found, but police discovered just one day after her last sighting on security cam, Tatum had gone to a local hardware store and purchased industrial trash bags, a shovel, and lime.
