I think its a better movie then "The Motion Picture" & "The Search for Spock". I loved the writing and Shatner did an ok job directing his first major gig. I'll admit I'm a bit biased as I like all the movies but still I think the weakest entry out of the original 10 is The Motion Picture which I give a 6.5/10.

I've liked the movie since it's original release and don't get all the hate either. I particularly love the scene towards the end when they're talking about family. That scene is my favorite scene in all of Star Trek.

I like aspects of it. I think it captures the spirit of the characters as well as any of the movies, and I enjoyed seeing them have fun together and how much they cared for one another.
But there's a lot of bad. Some silly continuity-type stuff - how the Enterprise can suddenly get to the centre of the galaxy in a matter of hours, how there are suddenly 70+ decks on the ship, how the decks count the wrong way, etc.
And the special effects are pretty terrible. That doesn't bother me too much.
The villain is terrible... largely because there really isn't much of a villain. They set Klaa up as the bad guy, but he's a nothing character, He wants to beat Kirk so he will be considered the best warrior in the galaxy, which is fair enough... but that's pretty much all we ever know about him. Contrast with Kruge in ST III, where we see his motivation, but also learn things about his character - he's willing to kill a woman who loves him (and he loves back?) because she knows more than she should, he kills subordinates who fail him - he's ruthless, but also quite smart and extremely determined. A good bad guy, and the film gives him a decent death.
Klaa... we know nothing about him, see little of him in action, and then at the end his villain role vanishes because his boss tells him off, so we can have 20 mins of Kirk fighting "god". And "god" is a villain who comes out of nowhere, we never know much of anything about him, and then he's defeated easily. Bleargh.
And some of the humour is just awful. Scotty head bumping? Uhura fan dance? Come on.
So yeah, I do think it's a pretty weak entry in the series. In fact, just about the weakest.

I find this to be one of the weakest films, if not the weakest.
I just didn't like the Sybok brainwashing stuff, and the search for God... which seems to be what most of the movie is about.
There were some good moments though:
I loved the beginning of the movie with Kirk, Spock, & McCoy having gone camping.
Sulu & Chekov getting lost and Uhura finding out was funny.
Learning about McCoy and his father was really heartbreaking.
All the discussions among Kirk, Spock, & McCoy about who was family to them, was nice.
The call back to their mission of "Where No One Had Gone Before", and what they were currently going through, was perfect.
Kirk asking God, why he needed a Starship, was very enlightening.
The part with Kirk facing the Bird Of Prey on the planet, was fantastic.
Sadly, these few good moments, don't compensate for how bad the rest of the film was.
