Titled 'Moonfall' it is literally about the Moon being knocked from orbit resulting in a collision course with the Earth. Roland Emmerich described it as a cross between 2012 and Close Encounters of the Third Kind in spite of the fact that the basic setup alone makes it sound eerily similar to I dunno, ARMAGEDDON!!!!!!
TEXT:
In Moonfall, a mysterious force that knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation. The film is written by Emmerich along with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. It has been likened as a combination of 2012 and Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, following “an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.” Read more at www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/1112088-lionsgate-lands-rights-emmerichs-sci-fi-action-film-moonfall#rCd5lT5dgza56f3v.99
Still, it'd probably be a nice rental. And upon reading the comments section, apparently it's based off a book by Jack McDevitt called Moonfall. Okay then.

In other words, it's Space:1999, only with the moon spinning towards earth, instead of the moon spinning away from earth. Well, at least with a budget that size, they should be able to come up with better special effects.

And without the snappy 1999 music.

Oh please tell me the mission is to mount a big engine on the moon and power it back into orbit! Incidentally, this has already been done.

Emmerich has just lost his touch. Independence Day: Resurgence was lame, and Midway was bland as hell. I’m not sure what he can do since he’s tried branching out in other genres without success. It’s funny, I get the love for the first ID4 and I like it too but I always thought his best movie was The Patriot.
