This is very interesting. I'm intrigued by this kind of thing. History for atheists? Clusium, I hope you're not thinking of turning your coat. We already lost Monicah.

Maybe she's converting to Jehovah's Witness. They don't celebrate Christmas and they say it's pagan. Maybe that's one of the things the Jehovah's Witnesses got right. I can't even remember a Christmas where the name of Christ was even mentioned. It was all about eating and unwrapping gifts.

Just what Jesus would do. Why don't you ask Him sometime?

The quintessential Christian holiday is Easter because it celebrates the resurrection. Christmas itself really has nothing to do with Christianity. It's idolatrous and is more a commercial holiday. Huh. Funny; I distinctly remember being told that the reasons we gave gifts to each other at Christmas had something to do with the shepherds and Wise Men bringing gifts to the Christ child. But I was raised Southern Baptist. I don't really remember how Santa Claus was factored in.

I don't really remember how Santa Claus was factored in... to my childhood experience. I know who St. Nicholas was. I just don't remember how my parents addressed the whole Santa Claus thing.

I'm remaining Catholic, because Christ Chose St. Peter as His Rock (St. Matthew chapter 16, verse 19).

It is Christ's Mass. I would beg to differ. Arius was right on target. They are three separate entities. Why would Christ pray to himself? You're the one who said Christmas was a pagan holiday. My point is that Easter is the central Christian holiday because it deals with the resurrection and is set at the vernal equinox. It commemorates the rebirth of nature as well after winter. It's great if you use the old pagan holiday to perform a Mass for Christ. But it is still a reconstituted pagan holiday. And everyone knows from the weather at the time of the nativity, Christ was not really born in winter. I was sharing an article. Nothing more & nothing less. It was actually intended to refute the claims that Christ was based upon Mithris or any other earlier deity.

Be that as it may, they chose to celebrate Christmas on December 25th to replace the pagan Roman holiday, Saturnalia. Yeah so? All Saints' Day was moved the week after Pentecost Sunday to November 1st, in order to replace Samhain on October 31'st.

This all goes back to my statement that Easter is the important Christian holiday, not Christmas. Yes, I realize that Easter is THEE most important Christian holiday. Ironically, anti-christian bigots also call Easter a pagan holiday too, simply because the name Easter. The thing is, unlike Christmas, Easter is celebrated around the time Of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection Of Christ. Moreover, in non-english & non-germanic languages, the holiday seems to take its name from Passover.

Sure, Easter corresponds to the vernal equinox which is important to agricultural societies everywhere, the beginning of Spring. It's just that my point was Easter deals with important acts of Christ. Christmas is just a birthday celebration. And you will get no argument from me nor any other Christian. However, since Christ IS OUR LORD, we choose to honour His Nativity.

Oh, good grief. Now you had to stir up the next. Half the people in America have had to keep the hate going for at least the 63 years I've been alive, every Christmas. Now you've got to get all the Scrooges to come out of the woodwork and do their usual war against Christmas. I guess we may as well get it out of the way.
It isn't possible for them to not realize how tedious and tiresome they are, just repeating it over and over, screaming on corners 24 hours a day from Thanksgiving till Christmas. So, it's good they go ahead and get hoarse yelling now.
Actually, there isn't a single day in the calendar year that one can't locate some pagan or more sinister celebration for in some place in the Old World. So, even if someone picked another date, it would get the same hate from the usual "out of control" loonies.
