I have never really liked Ricky Gervais, I can't lie. Always seemed funny, but a little too British smug for my taste. Comes off as the "crazy unpredictable funnyman", but always seemed forced to me.
That's all changed however, after watching his 8 minute opening speech as the host of last night's Golden Globes awards show.
I don't just like Ricky Gervais now, but I admire the guy. The SCORCHING he laid on the "beautiful people" of Hollywood last night was a wonder to behold, and a loooooooong time coming.
Uncomfortable silences, polite laughter, disbelieving looks on the plastic faces? You got it all in this one, plus a Jeffrey Epstein joke that drew groans from the phonies who are constantly telling us how we should live.
I'm too lazy and ignorant to have yet figured out how to post this stuff, so just look it up yourselves. And watch the whole 8 minutes, it's well worth it.
God bless ya, Ricky Gervais. You got my respect now, pal.

I heard most of his monologue and other jokes. While on the surface I liked it and thought he was spot on, part of me was like “Yet this is the fifth time you’re hosting this, must not be too terrible.” Still, I liked it.

Something tells me he wont be invited back ever again. Someone says that every time he’s the host. That was his fifth time. He gave them exactly what they wanted.

My politics tend to be more like the Hollywood elite. With that being said, Gervais was funny and spot on in most cases. I'm completely against censorship and political correctness. The James Corden joke was laugh out loud funny.

I always thought he was PERFECT for this show, and really enjoyed his snarky, kick 'em in the ass approach, regardless of how contrived it may (or may not) have been............though not last night. He seemed like he REALLY didn't want to be there, and a number of his jokes just seemed "off", and not funny at all. Also, with awards shows like this increasingly cutting down on most of the unnecessary "extras" that they used to have (in an effort to get their overlong running times down), other than that 3-5 minute opening monologue, it seems almost pointless to call them a "host" anymore, since you so rarely see them again once that part is over..... SAVE FERRIS

Christ, he crushed it. Scorched earth.
All the self-important, sanctimonious liberal Hollywood twits were not happy. Wonderful!

He was great, but why do you only like him now? He's done this very thing before.
He's all about the equal opportunity hammering, and not that many of these people can take a joke. Hearing the 50/50 split of laughs and groans was even funnier than any joke he told.

Man, he was awesome! I haven't gotten such good laugh from a award show host since Chris Rock in the Academy Award during the George W. Bush era more than 10 years ago. His joke on the mememorium was offensively hilarious. Ricky Gervais is really part of the Hollywood elite. He probably got sick of the "cancel culture" in the past few years and just let it all out on the show. He would not back down a few weeks ago when he was attacked on the social media for not being political correct.
If you like his kind of jokes and have Netflix, you will like Dave Chappelle's stand up comedy "Sticks and Stones". They are like a throw back to the great George Carlin when he made fun of people wound up too tight, except that Carlin made fun the overly conservative in the 70s and they made fun of the modern authoritative politically correctness.

I didn't see this in his opening monologue, but apparently at one point in the show he was booed, and he responded with something along the line of "I can handle your boos, I've seen the kinds of things you cheer". BAMMO!

What I find really funny is that to my ears, nothing he said was even approaching offensive. At All. I don’t get what the controversy is about.

Love Gervais! Hope he doesn't have an "accident" I hear they are already taking bets in Vegas as to how soon before Ricky Gervais "commits suicide". Maybe a dark thing to joke about, but then again maybe not.....

He was brilliant as usual. He takes the piss out of Hollywood royalty every year he does it. What I find really funny is the right wingers on the politics board calling him a hero, if only they knew what he thought of them. And shame on anybody there the other night with serious faces on them(like Nicole Kidmans bitch) it was all only a bit of fun, just look at DeNiro and Scorsese's faces

I love that the right wingers loved it. If only they realised how left wing he is. Just loves taking the piss out of everything and everyone, a pretty normal British trait, including ourselves.

Well, he did accuse Apple of running sweatshops right in front of the CEO, so there's that. If it weren’t true - he’d have been issued writs before he left the podium. Truth, no matter how uncomfortable, by it’s very nature isn’t offensive. If Apple’s CEO doesn’t like it - don’t run sweatshops.
