If you go back to 1999, party like it's 1999, because it is.
If you go back to 1996 and get a phone call sales pitch trying to get you to invest in Lucent Technologies, take it. I wish I had. Same goes for some crazy new gimmick called Cellular.
If you go back to 1975 and can only see one movie, see "Against a Crooked Sky."
If you go back to 1948 and see a newspaper with the headline DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN, buy it and keep it in good condition. It will be a collector's item someday.
If you go back to 1943 and find a newly minted copper penny, treat it the same way as the above-mentioned newspaper.
If you go back to 1929 you can make a lot of money, but remember that for every boom there's a bust.
If you go back to 1900 and someone mentions the Boxer Rebellion, please remember it has nothing to do with underpants.

Try to avoid becoming your own grandparent.

Try to avoid becoming your own grandparent. Catman brings an important point. Can't put too much emphasis on this one.

On the other hand, being your own grandfather could mean you would need to cobble together a working mind without the normal Delta brainwave possessed by other sentient species (much like a prom dress made from assorted rags), and that would come in handle when the Brainspawn attack (not to mention blocking the Dark One's ability to read your mind).

On September 10, 2001 - get sell short contracts at end of day that you will get the stocks back in two weeks. Fall 2007 - sell all holdings in stock market. Buy Canadian term deposits. six months later, buy stocks again.

take spare undies.
You never know when you might be subjected to anal probing if things go wrong.

If you tasked are in the killing of John Connor or his mother just do it, don't spin it out over several duff sequels.

Have fun, but please try to kill Baby Hitler before you return. Just make sure you don't hit Eleanor Roosevelt by mistake!

If your wife is murdered, you can't build a Time Machine to save her... This would mean that you would have no reason to build the Time Machine in the first place, and that paradox will destroy the universe. Bring plenty of cameras with you and take notes, because everyone will expect you to have answers to the greatest mysteries of history. If you go really far back in time... Don't pick up rocks from river banks. That will change how they flow in your time. Avoid Salem, Massachusetts from 1692-1693... The locals will destroy your Time Machine, and burn you at the stake for practicing Witchcraft... Don't book passage on any ships named the "Titanic"... Remember, ( paulslaugh )... Hitler can't be killed, and you can't save JFK... but history doesn't care about what happens to all the John Smith's out there.Remember that you can send notes to your future self, if you have Lawyers & Western Union to save them for you. Bring extra fuel with you, so you don't get stuck in the past... Always remember to think fourth dimensionally... That bridge may not be built yet, but it WILL be built in the future.

Dig up a few key artifacts and carve "This was placed here by Erich Von Daniken". (Buy my book).

I'd go back to the stop that horrible tragedy that happened to John Lennon: That's two tragedies; John's assassination and Yoko's singing.
