I've seen the first but not the second. Is it overrated? What is so good about it? I saw a couple of scenes and wasn't impressed. I hope this doesn't turn in to a franchise. I hope to not see any more movies based on those paranormal investigators. Most of this might not even be true.

Conjuring 2 is a great movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it and still do. I believe it may turn into a franchise as there is talk already for C3.

The Conjuring 2 is slightly better than the first, but that's damning with faint praise I suppose. It still relies on flat cliches of characters, painfully poorly draw expository dialogue, and cheap halloween haunted house jump scares from ghosts in silly looking makeup. There's a certain charm to the period setting and the somewhat wholesome approach to the proceedings, I suppose, but it's still pretty dull, bland, and over reliant on really cheap and lazy tactics.... Like all of James Wan's stuff.

They are based on the experiences of real life couple doing paranormal investigations. However the consensus seems that they were crooks. Ok that woudn't hurt a movie for me. But to me these movies are crap anyway.
