Hard to say. Lucas never made those statements until the EU started hitting big in the 90s. Back in the 80s, fans read these novelizations and ate up the extra info as extra bits of canon that weren't shown in the films. So it stands to reason that they may have been upset when the prequels later shifted direction of some of these aspects. At the very least, it shows us that Lucas did indeed change his intent. When ROTJ was shot, the intent was that Luke/Leia's mother lived on and took Leia to Alderaan herself. So Leia saying she remembered her mother makes more sense in that context. Even though a lot of that exposition ended up on the cutting room floor, I'd still count it as a retcon. I came across this, and thought I would provide it here since we were talking about novelizations earlier. Del Rey, the publisher, on the novelizations...not very surprising given their position, but I thought, 'eh, why not?'

Pablo Hidalgo gave a good clarification on his (now defunct) Twtter: "I always say, they're an adaptation of canonical events with some differences due to medium and authorial interpretation."

No wonder the movies are such a mess when someone like that is "keeper of the canon". Good grief. At least Del Rey was specific and to the point with their stance.

I feel the explanations compliment each other. The films are canon. The novelizations are adaptations of that canonical material. At the end of the day, he's just the keeper, not the author. Unfortunately, there's little he can do when Iger/Kennedy gave carte Blanche to individual directors to run roughshod over the franchise, leaving the rest of the team to try and make it all fit in the existing canon....

Hmmm it does make a person wonder, 'Why put someone in charge of the canon, if that person doesn't have control to veto decisions?!' Bizarre.

With the questionable decision of making 10 year old Leia a character in the Obi-Wan show, the least they could have done is flesh this out.

I don't get it. In Return of the Jedi (1983) she clearly said she remembers images, feelings. People remember things that didnt even happen sometimes; in real life! It's a forgiveable little intseeny weeny plot hole. Doesnt ruin anything. NEXT!

Or maybe Leia is one of those rare individuals who does not have infantile amnesia.
