A bit of a hyperbolic title, but couldn't really think of a best way to describe the thread.
4 directors, 2 features each, all (that I've seen) impressive.
Who do you think will continue to make great horror films? Who has great promise? Who is the best so far?

Well, I think Ari Aster and Robert Eggers are the two superior filmmakers, but I also think they will leave the genre. In the case of both of their follow up films horror fans have already been debating if they count as horror movies or not (somehow Midsommar wasn't a horror film to some people, I guess).
I don't know if there's any word on Aster's next project but Eggers is prepping a Viking movie at the moment. That could very well be a horror movie, but I'd guess it will be more in the vain of something like Valhalla Rising fini had to imagine what it will be like.
And I haven't seen his earlier short film stuff, but Ari Aster mostly made fucked up short drama films from my understanding. So I could easily see him making something outside of the horror genre next.
Panos Cosmatos may not make another film for a decade. So who the fuck knows?
Jordan Peele, however, has said he intends to make original films 'in the genre' and is producing a ton of horror stuff. I don't think he's the best of most creative of the group, but he's most likely to continue to leave a mark. Plus his stuff is much more mainstream and popular.
But... I'd say Eggers and Aster have already left a bigger mark on the genre in terms of influence. When you look at many of the hit horror movies since they've made their stuff so many of them seem to pull from their style, or at least from the same influences they have.
So, in summation, I guess I don't have any fucking idea how to answer the question. Sorry.

I agree with masterofallgoons that Ari Astor might leave the genre. His films already feel like Oscar dramas with horror elements. Strip out the satanic cult, and Hereditary is Ordinary People.
Although I think Eggers will stick around. He's already got a specific niche: horror films with period accurate dialogue. Idk what his Vikings movie is, but I reckon it'll be more of that.
Peele obviously WANTS to be the future of horror, and everyone seems to be going along with it as long as he is. The only thing is, he started off as a comedian before he became a horror guy, so what's stopping him from doing another jump? He says he wants to stay within the genre, but we'll see.
I don't think the Mandy guy is in the conversation.

Horror will only thrive outside the system control. None of them are doing horror audience focused films-they are doing critic-focused ones.
Anything the violates the owner tastes will not be funded--it is way too narrow a theme range to have a future.
From wikipedia's plot summary for the Lighthouse:
"The weeks continue, and Winslow masturbates to the figurine of the mermaid and continues to see Wake naked."

I went with Jordan Peele, when you say the future of horror, I take that as who will be the most influential figure in horror. He is on track to, if not already established as a "name above the title" brand in the genre, i.e. Hitchcock, King, Romero, Carpenter, Craven etc. Ari Aster will certainly be an important name in horror, but the fact that his two movies are more riffs on things that have been done before with a ton of really nightmarish imagery added, he doesn't really have the wide appeal. Cosmatos and Eggers are making really good movies, but they don't really move the needle outside the festival circuit. The SXSW twitter critics went wild for Mandy, but that movie kind of requires a full house of wired movie lovers to enjoy, it doesn't quite have the same transcendence when you're watching it on VOD.

Ari, although the others are not far behind. Midsommar is a perfect 10 for me
