I love, love, LOVE onions, any which way you send em up, just keep the onions coming. Garlic? Eh, garlic toast with a spaghetti dinner would be the only time I really would enjoy garlic. A little hint of it in the sauce is okay, but I am not a big fan of garlic by any means. I really don't like it. The smell is overpowering to me. Now grilled onions is an aroma to die for. But garlic probably my least favorite "spice", or whatever category it belongs to.
But even my onion love can't compare to my father's fondness for the onion, which I have seen him eat the way one would eat an apple.

Garlic adds flavor and is one of the only food groups that contains 5 of the six tastes. There is some contention though in Ayurveda , what taste it doesn't have. I think it is salty.
I like to cook more with red onion lately, a bit sweeter and not so pungent. Nice in bolognaise sauce, for me, meatless of course. You mean like salty, bitter, sweet, etc.? Red onions are less pungent than white onions. I love Vidalia onions and also love shallots (may be my favorite).

I could make a meal out of both.
I assume you've had sweet onions (e.g. Vidalia).

I love both. I don't cook very often, but when I do, I almost always include onions and a bit of garlic.
