Did no one else see it this weekend?
It was a 7.5 for me so low B to high C range.
I read Mad Max Fury Road was conceived to be a giant car chase. This movie was obviously conceived to be a gunfight.
But I enjoyed myself.

Tomorrow I have to decide between Free Fire or The Promise. I really don't know which as of now.

It was just okay imo . Felt at times like the director and actors were trying too hard to be a Tarantino ripoff film (R Dogs comes to mind). Armie Hammer was a scene stealer in this.
Overall I 'll give it a 6/10

Overall I 'll give it a 6/10 I didn't get Tarantino. It was 70s. Very 70s. Hammer's character was the most reasonable-tried to keep things on an even keel. The 2 bottom flunkies that blew it up seemed odd-one should expect professionalism, but it also reflected on the top not vetting them properly. A co-worker has the theory the reason Star Wars hit so big was it was FUN, particularly compared to the average 70s flick that wallowed in misery or grim harsh reality. I've never really agreed with her on that, but I do agree this film, while funny, has the harsh reality down.

Murphy was good. He was the rebel leader. The IRA gun buyer & was also more reasonable.
Larsen was a good female character. The only one, really, but not shoehorned into a stereotype. Maybe a bit the looking-out-for-#1, but that was really several of them. There was a decided split of chivalrous guys vs the ones who saw her as fair game.

The trailer made the movie seem like a spoof; is that how you would describe it?

No. If it's satire, it's pretty poor. It's why I don't get the Tarantino comparison because I see Tarantino as rather over the top in his humor. This is a bit more subtle. It is a gun deal in a warehouse. The beginning gets one into the warehouse where things go south thanks to unprofessionalism & then its a bunch of people with guns with next to no faith in others. In a way, it's closer to a party lost in the forest trying to shoot the threats, but not their teammates, conmplicated by the addition of a third party. The humor isn't overpowering. It's not Lethal Weapon buddy banter level

Would you say that the film has anything notable to offer, thematically or aesthetically, or is it a somewhat amusing action piece, a throwaway type of thing? To put it another way, does the movie offer some sort of insight into its time period or does it just go for stylistic trappings?

I wouldn't say there was a message hammered home. It's the director's leanings. The working class come off a bit better even if it's a bloodbath figuratively though less actually visually, another divergent point from Tarantino. Action piece with humor

So I keep hearing its very 70s. Is it good 70s or bad 70s? It's 70s style-clothes, etc. The concept isn't as much, I believe. It's a gunfight. Very much that is the single concept.

I guess it's most like a sliver. Twilight Zone sort of "imagine if you will a warehouse. An illegal arms deal going down." It just lacks the really wicked twist, though it does end in a slight twist.

Honestly, I found it kind of boring. Hammer and Copley are real standouts, however.
