Is there a way to not see particular avatars ?
When several of the dancing / walking / stop-an-frisk avatar users are all on the same page at the same time it's really REALLY hard to read the posts because of all that activity to the left of the screen.
I know that all avatars can be made invisible but can one cloak only certain ones ?

AdBlocker Ultimate.
Click on the ABU icon, select Block Element, move your cursor to the avatar, and click.
You can also block ads on many websites, even this one. Or you can choose to whitelist a site if you really like the ads.

Thnx ! No way to do it right here without downloading something or other ?
BTW … the dancing kitty is NOT one of the annoying ones … It's the wild ones with many colors and random motion when there are a whole page all carrying on at once. Brings on symptoms similar to pop-art induced nausea.

How about fitting a curtain onto your screen?

What if you close your left eye while reading threads? 😉

You can block stuff like that using uBlock Origin (by Raymond Hill) on your Firefox/Chrome browser. it's completely free and is light on resources.
but in general... I would not install too many extensions for your browser as the less the better. but installing a good ad/pop-up blocker (which the one I mentioned is pretty much the best free ad/popup etc blocker) is a must since it cleans up the internet.
pretty much everyone should have that installed anyways since the internet would suck without it since it removes ads and other unwanted junk so a website functions like a website should. even with sites like YouTube, you see no ads and videos just play straight up
some more advice... you could always have two browsers installed, like Firefox/Chrome, and whatever one you most prefer install uBlock Origin to it and use it in general and keep the other browser in it's default state, so even if by some chance a website breaks, you can always load the other browser which will be in it's default state. but uBlock Origin works pretty good in it's default state even though I have mine further tweaked (which increases my security further as I have it setup so '3rd-party frames' are blocked by default and I can enable on a individual website if needed but doing that increases website breakage as even on this IMDB2 site for example it will automatically block any YouTube/Twitter etc embedded links people post but I just tweaked it so they are not blocked on this site)) to block more junk but my risks increases of breaking websites (i.e. websites don't function as they should) but I can work around it etc. but like I was saying... uBlock Origin in it's default state is pretty good. so it's pretty much a install it and forget about it sort of thing. I suggest Firefox in general (it's been pretty much my primary browser for over 15 years now) as if permissions change on a extension it will ask for permission before being allowed to automatically update where as on Chrome it just updates.

How about fitting a curtain onto your screen? I figure you are kidding but, on some pages when all "the wild movers" are participating, a cardboard is held up to cover the left side of the screen .. makes it a bit difficult to type though !

To clarify.... I was not proposing that the moving avatars be eliminated.
I wanted to know if there was a way to stop seeing them which is built into the site without having to install something else.
asked and answered. Thanks

If you use a large tablet to read the boards and chose “desktop” mode you could zoom in a bit and then move the avatars to one side. I tend to do that without thinking but it might be one of the reasons why the avatars don’t bother me.

Stammerhead am on a desk top 'puter only so the options are limited In that case I’ll have to go back to only giving silly solutions like “take screenshots, print them out and read them”.

Every so often, I consider disabling gifs for avatars. One of these days it might be more than just a consideration. In the meantime, if you're going to cover them all up anyway, why not just turn them all off in your settings?

Plus, they identify who is there without having to look at the names. As I said , I thought I had seen a way to not see certain ones without doing some add on... guess not tho'. It's mostly when there are several making wild moves all together on one page but there is a work around for that ! .

There's probably a way to disable them in your browser without installing any addons. I know there used to be, anyway, as well as a way to stop them after they run once. Furthermore, if you see any that could cause problems with epileptics, please report them.

To help alleviate the situation I have practiced safe postal distancing in this thread by waiting until at least six replies were posted after Catman's.

Just to confirm, Ass_E9's moving avatar is not irritating. So is Catman's, that's probably cos it's not in colour. I also find some of the plain, non-moving images bothersome. For that and everything else I have uBlock Origin, recommended by mslo79. But of all the users here, I have only disabled two avatars.

AdminYeah, I just noticed this recently (was playing around in there and happened to notice that option) which I did (then I removed the added filters for blocking specific avatars in uBlock Origin. so now my custom filters are quite a bit less). but just to make sure it did not completely disable the avatars we are using, I disabled the showing of all avatars and applied it, reloaded website, there is no avatars displayed as expected, then turned them back on and my avatar is still there. so in other words... even when I turn off the showing of all avatars, the one I setup still shows to others unless they disable showing of avatars. p.s. but thing I do like about avatars is it can be a bit easier to find someones messages since we start to get familiar with what avatar goes to which person on some level. but overall ill just deal with it since it cleans up the site and makes it load faster. Personally I would flat out disable gifs if it were up to me. pictures are okay but gifs are a bit bloated and take more time to load (a bit more CPU usage to) especially when you get gifs that are kind of large in size and one does not have a super fast internet connection etc. gifs just add more bloat to the site which is not a good thing. so you got my blessing if you want to completely disable gifs
