To be honest, I always hated night clubs. I'm a social kind of guy when I go out, I want to drink beer and set the world to rights, and I never found clubs that social. Lots of loud music, so you can't converse, and it was always at least 90% shit. Interesting choice of music in those opening posts, because Kaw-Liga is just about the greatest cover version ever, PWEI's Box Frenzy is an absolute classic, and I spy an Arthur Russell contribution I'm not familiar with.
Anyway, I'm not gonna claim that I was at the cutting edge of minimal techno or something in my yoof, that I was an influencer picking the right Italo-house white labels. I remember the music being shit, and if I summed up my student year in just one dancefloor smash, it would be this thing:

I love most of the music that's been posted in this thread so far although I'd be lying if I said this was the stuff I grew up on - well with the exception of 'Voodoo Ray', that song had lasting appeal for years. Goth and post-punk I only became familiar with after my youth ended. My clubbing days were from 1998 (when I was 14 years old) to about 2005. It may have been the height of trance and the emergence of hard house and I heard a lot of that but this is what I remember more fondly:
I grew up listening to trance, big beat, hardcore breakbeat but mainly at home. I did go to clubs and festivals that played this stuff but the stuff that really shaped me was techno, hip-hop, breakbeat, drum 'n' bass, and then later dubstep clubs where a mishmash of genres was merged together into the sets. That was my thing, the blending in not only beats and rhythms but in general sound, texture, ideas, and cultures. I still abide by this when it comes to dance music.
My opinion of clubbing has definitely changed over the years. I couldn't tolerate one nowadays, it'd drain me of energy and just make me depressed. It's one of the many reasons I stopped going to them, however without them I wouldn't be who I was today. I am very fond of the memories of youthful exuberance and irresponsibility. I'm all for the idea of them still, just not for me anymore. From ages 21 to 35 I grew old and fat.

This one I knew by sound more than name because it would appear on multiple mashup / bastard pop DJ sets I liked, from The Avalanches, 2 Many DJs, Optimo and others. I always thought it was just those DJs fucking around with Michael Jackson and other things, didn't realise until years later that it was The Residents who I learned to love for different reasons. This is the one instance where I first learned about it around the time this DJ set came out (although without the video, I had no idea this existed until last year) (from around 24:30)

Also the Andy Votel ones which are way more obscure and eclectic, but always something new to discover

I was quite obsessed with all this about 15-20 years ago. I still listen to some now and again although of course the scene's kind of evolved, particularly with vaporwave emerging in the last decade. Still great to dig out an old Osymyso or Go Home Productions record again and just have fun with. For the past couple of weeks I've actually been trying to uncover an Osymyso mix I used to relentlessly repeat back in 2003ish but that guy seems to have dropped off the face of the earth. All those things he made for fun are gone.

Is this the Twilight Zone?? More likely we're in our 40's... Got some Osymyso mixes somewhere, new years eve, etc. The ones I have start off with movie dialogue samples, so if you can remember anything like that, or songs, I can see if I can unearth my CDs.
