The Toon secure promotion to the EPL, where they belong with that support.
Preston tactics were to defend deep in their own half and look to score from counter-attacks and it worked in the 1st half as they quickly equalised Perez' opener. I was keen to see McGeady who has been earning rave notices at Deepdale but he was starved of service as Preston hoofed long balls up the middle and was substituted on 70 minutes, much to his relief, I imagine, when the game was lost. Outstanding for Rafa were Shelvey and Ritchie. Most attacks involve one or both of them and their class is evident. but there is a lot of goodies up front with good interplay between Perez, Mitrovic and Atsu and they have Gayle, out injured for this game. Rafa will want a decent transfer budget from Mike Ashley, if he is to compete with the BIG boys next season.

Thanks for report, I was wondering how they played. Sometimes I can't be bothered trawling through a 3,000 word match analysis in the press. I wonder if Benitez has the nucleus of a promising Premier side there, although he will of course have to go shopping. I'm actually glad for the Toon fans; yes, they had their (justified) moans last season but damn me if they weren't there week in week out at St James' in large numbers throughout 2015/16.

and again this season. In truth, every season, which is why I say that they should be a fixture in the EPL, similar to Everton and Saints. Much will depend on Ashley, who needs to develop the right kind of relationship with his manager and CEO. Have a look at Celtic and see how Desmond, Lawwell and Rodgers do it.

Potential purchasers of the club must be very pleased with the 50,000+ crowds every home game. I think there are businessmen in Qatar and China who have been sniffing around.
