I started reading for pleasure when I was 8 but I was lucky because I lived in an area that valued education and children were encouraged to read and pursue the arts. I was a child in the 50's and our suburb was about 50% Jewish at that time, many of the parents were survivors of the camps and many of them were highly educated people. The individual school districts had a lot of power in what was taught. We also learned to respect each others differences.
