It isn't often that a thread on the Politics board seems like a natural leap to Food & Drink, but someone posted about the relatively warm European winter causing the failure of the ice wine crop in Germany. That led to a couple of posts about ice wine, in general
I love wine, and drink my "fair share," of it. But, I've never tried ice wine. I know that it's sweet, and considered to be a "dessert wine," which is why I haven't aggressively sought it out. I shouldn't pre-judge, and I do like some Ports.
Has anyone tried it? Is it syrupy, or is the sweetness more subtle, with the fruit flavor coming through? Sweet liqueurs, like Grand Marnier, are far too sweet for me.
I checked the availability at my local Bev-Mo. They have two in their inventory, and the cheaper one is $30.00. The other is nearly $50.00. That's too expensive for an experiment.
Thoughts?

Catman remembers a segment about making ice wine on How It's Made.

Thanks, Catman. I'll check YouTube. There's a "How it's made," series, running there.

It's absolutely delicious. It is a dessert wine but you can make it nice and cold! You will drink it like a liqueur more than wine. It comes in various varietals and is quite expensive.

divtal: I've tried it, albeit years ago, so I'm just going by memory. Yes, it's very sweet, but "syrupy"... nah, I'd just say it's got a denser consistency than your average white wine, but not syrupy. I don't know if you'd like it or hate it - I think it depends on your tolerance for sweetness in wine. It is pricey, but a little goes a long way. Also, ice wine doesn't have to be just from Europe: it's being produced in parts of Canada, as well as here in Washington State, also in Michigan and New York State.
