Everyone is saying that Miller is done with Mad Max. I've heard that he never expected the love for Fury Road to be as big as it was and he was even afraid that his movie wouldn't live up to the hype of the trailers. Obviously he made a great movie and the people loved it, but now the Fury Road sequel hasn't been heard of for months.
Could Mel Gibson take up the mantle? He has just been welcomed back into Hollywood after Hacksaw Ridge's mammoth success. Not to mention that he, of course, played Max in the original Mad Max trilogy. I think it sounds perfect, especially now that Gibson is considered one of the best action directors ever. He also has no projects officially lined up as of yet.
Do you think he could do a good job? There's also a part of me that thinks it's a little too good of a match to be true. Let me know what you think.

I would love Mel Gibson to take up the mantle. The guy knows how to direct a damn good film and I think he and Hardy would work so well together. Really hope something like this happens although I really want Mel to give us that Viking film he's been promising us for years!
It's nice to see Mel being welcomed back, he's one of the best directors alive.

he'd be my go-to pick if i can't have Miller back again.
i don't think i've seen anyone outside of the Mad Max fanbase suggest it, though. i dunno how likely it might be.

He would be an interesting choice if George Miller doesnt want to come back.

Some people are suggesting that he does still want to do a sequel to Fury Road, but he's simply too old and tired to direct it. That could be possible with the rumors that Fury Road was kind of strenuous to film. I could see him producing it and being on set from time to time if Gibson actually did get the director's chair, though.

Outstanding idea. I'd be all for it for sure. Just how profitable was Fury Road though? Are they really moving forward with a sequel (I am no box office expert)

Are they really moving forward with a sequel (I am no box office expert) It had a budget of $150 million and it made just over $375 million. So, no, it wasn't a smashing success. Those numbers are pretty similar to Batman Begins'. Batman Begins had the same budget, as well, and wasn't all that successful. Word-of-mouth was high with both of these movies, though, and we all know how great The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises turned out (both over $1 billion at the box office) due to positive word of mouth on Begins. That's probably what they're looking for with a Fury Road sequel.

Not to mention that he, of course, played Max in the original Mad Max trilogy. Why not? He does direct very well. I'd even go as far as to say that he should have played the part of Max in Fury Road. It would have brought him back into the fold as it were. But Hardy was fine too. Yeah, Mel could do it, IF miller doesn't want to.
