What I don't understand is why they altered every single one of the original prints.
It's as if they never even intended to keep them, but then why call the re-release "special edition" if you intend it to be the definitive edition, as after that it was the only version of star wars available aside from old VHS tapes from the 80s/early 90s.
It's not a big deal, but I still think the unaltered original cuts are better.,.but then I also quite like some of the additions, like seeing Dash Rendar's ship in the skies above Tatooine.
Really the films are still great, the additions don't really tarnish them in any major way, it may just be nostalgia.

The lazer disc prints can be found on the internet. Thats about as original as it gets I'm afraid. They only have some minor alterations.

Even though, I too, have the 2006 "laserdisc theatrical editions" DVD releases...
I am disappointed in this decision. I really thought that now that GL is no longer in control of these films, that we might finally get a HQ release of the originals. But I guess they will never get the respect they are due.
I don't think I can think of any other film, that has been treated like this... Director's cuts, special editions. Sure. But they were released with the Theatrical Editions.
The sad thing is, many people, including myself (I watch both), don't really even mind... MOST... of the changes Lucas made. We just want to have the theatrical cut, alongside his latest versions.
So, what now? Do we have to wait for the 50th anniversary in 2027 for the next remote chance of seeing an official release?

Consumers should be able to buy the movies they saw in the theater originally, if only for nostalgia's sake. Most fans will buy BOTH versions of the films. I know I would. I have the theatrical and extended version of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I know I would be very angry if Peter Jackson would one day decide to do away with the version of "Fellowship" that I saw and fell in love with. I don't think George Lucas got it.

I seem to recall reading somewhere, some years ago, that the real reason for this is because Lucas's ex-wife is legally entitled to a percentage of any $$$ generated by home video sales of the original SW trilogy in the original, theatrically-released form.
For the so-called special editions, she gets nada.

One day, when George Lucas dies and Disney has complete control with no contractual obligations to the man, they will. Part of the Billions of dollars they spent to own the rights included a clause stating they wouldn't alter or change Lucas' re-released films. In Lucas' eyes, the remastered films are canon. |
