The Movie, A+Michael Douglas (Nick), ASharon Stone (Catherine Tramell), A+Jeanne Tripplehorn (Dr. Garner), A+George Dzundza (Gus), A To me, this movie came out at the perfect time for it's main plot and cast of actors. After the very-missed variety of horror we had in the 80's, mystery suspense thrillers really took over a majority of the 90's as the next best thing with blood and murder. You also had the sub-genre, 'women killers', become something fans craved to want to see more of. "Misery", "Single White Female", "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle", just to name a few of the popular ones. I myself, really like this sub-genre, which you still find today with younger plots and casts. For me, the 80's were taken over by a huge wave of horror movies. In the 90's, thrillers and action films were some of the best around. For most of the 90's, movies didn't rely on CGI unless you were the blockbuster of the year. So you had movies like this with a fresh plot and excellent cast to fill in the movie seats. I didn't watch this movie all the time, but I remember it was something people talked about for years.Nick: Michael Douglas really flourished in this role as a detective. He has the look, the voice, the attention to detail that makes everything he says and does believable in the film. Of course, that's Michael Douglas. The only reason I give him an A grade only for in this movie, is because it's really Douglas acting as himself. Which I shouldn't judge an actor over, but I don't know. Douglas' role in the movie, "Falling Down", now that is an A+ acting grade. It's simple though, without Douglas in this movie, it wouldn't be the movie it is today. Even for an actor who's 14 years older than Sharon Stone, their chemistry was undeniably convincing. She was just over 30 years old at the time, and Douglas was nearly 50 years old. That shows acting talent from both parts. I remember it was funny, I saw an interview with actor Michael Keaton at around the time of this movie's release. The interviewer asked Keaton if his real is actually Michael Douglas and not Michael Keaton? His response, "Oh, yeah. But I had to change it because someone who's now doing porn had the same name at the time." Keaton, was referring to Michael Douglas and the string of his sexual performances in his latest movies, "Fatal Attraction", "Basic Instinct", "Disclosure", etc. I love Michael Keaton and I love Michael Douglas in movies, but I just thought that was a hilarious answer to the question. Also, Michael Keaton got his last name, because when he got into acting Diane Keaton was his favorite actress. Just for some fun side movie trivia, ha.Catherine Tramell: Sharon Stone really was beautiful in this movie and in most of her movies. She clearly was on her way to success after the release of this film. I don't follow her career completely, but this movie is up there with one of my favorite movies of hers. "Casino" to name another Stone film. Of course, her nudity had a huge influence on people liking this movie. I read somewhere, too, that Stone regrets showing her 'below-the-waist' nudity in the famous interrogating scene. I can see why she'd have some regret. I actually never thought it was that big of a scene, I mean, compared to the hardcore sex scenes she did later in the film. Some of those scenes were extended far more than what they needed to be, lol. I applaud she went as far as she did with her physical appearance. That opening murder in the movie was such an awesome opening to set the whole tone. I met a girl a while back who was 18 and looked like a dead-on Sharon Stone, which I told her she did. Her response was, "Who is Sharon Stone?" I just laughed, telling her, "It doesn't matter, lol." I think it was around five years ago when I watched Stone in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, who'll ask some great questions with his guests. Kimmel asked Stone and well told her that he had heard she'd never watched a porn film of any kind in her entire lifetime - hoping she'd answer if that were true or not. She answered, saying yes to the question. "I was the straight-A student, girl next door kind of girl. It's why as an actress I felt free to let go into those roles as much as I did, sexually. It was all about the character for me." Stone is great!Dr. Garner: As for actress Jeanne Tripplehorn, I really don't know her career that well. Which is interesting, because she played such a fantastic character in this movie. Much like the role of Douglas as Nick, she's always on the right side of the law. Sure, you can take a couple side steps and have relationships with people you work around, ha - Her and Nick in the film no matter what though, wanted the case to be solved for justice. I also like that she has clear feelings for Nick, the two just seemed to bounce off each other better as friends and colleagues than lovers. That and the sociopath Sharon Stone came into the picture. The only other thing I remember Tripplehorn from was the movie "Waterworld", I really wasn't crazy for that movie. What I did like about that film really had nothing to do with her character in that film. For me, this is really a stand-out role for her. Sadly, we didn't get to see her star in more lead roles even later in her career.Gus: I think every movie should have a comic relief kind of character in a serious film. One who doesn't over do it. Whether it's only for a handful of scenes or pivotal role; whether or not it's the main villain or lead hero - humor in serious movies really brings out the maturity of humor, I think. Actor George Dzundza was that character in this film. He's even kind of a lovable character in the film, who's really on the right side of everything as a police detective. I like how he busts Michael Douglas' balls the entire film involving Catherine Tramell, lol. Their scene at the diner together while Gus is tipsy I couldn't help but laugh at multiple times upon viewing. Actor George Dzundza has had several small side roles where he did incorporate his innocent humor on. "Deer Hunter" and "Dangerous Minds" just to name two other films. The film has a great cast in the smaller roles, but he certainly rounds up the side performances in his one performance alone.
Again, a really great movie. When I start talking about movies they all start to race through my mind like I've recently watched them. I haven't, lol. I did get to see this movie a few times at the end of last year when it was on cable. It was awesome to get the 'basic instinct' vibe under your skin again. The dialogue and score music all take you right back to San Francisco where the movie was filmed. This gif below is far more awesome than any sex scene in the movie, my opinion.

Basic Instinct is one of those films I consider to be just about perfect. Stone and Douglas were ideal casting, but the whole cast are fantastic. Did anybody ever do a sleazy sweat as well as Wayne Knight? Or play a better asshole cop than Daniel von Bargen?
A+ all around for me.
