1/10 Piece of crap film. There was no reason to remake Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). It had the perfect ensemble, especially with Gene Wilder as the lead. What's next, Harry Potter & the Chocolate Factory?

What's next, Harry Potter & the Chocolate Factory? I mean -- yeah. I gave it a 5/10, but all those points came around the margins. I thought there were some nice touches in terms of set design, special effects, etc., and that Depp was not terrible while not being amazing either. That said: it's a piece of crap film that didn't need to be made and Depp's performance isn't even in the same league as Wilder's.

Fun, the first time I saw it. The ending just drags on, for no good reason, and I don't like Johnny Depp in it, too creepy. A 6 for me.

Amusingly enough, I agree with both Utpe and coldenhaulfield . It's a weird movie--Burton is not the right director for this material--and I thought Depp's performance was atrocious. Absolutely atrocious--self-indulgent, creepy, unfunny, over-the-top, unable to muster up emotion, hammy in a way that'd make Tod Slaughter tell him to stop chewing the scenery... Didn't like in the theater, don't like it now. Oy. Depp's performance to one side, there are a few decent things in the picture--I like the call-backs to and side-stories from Dahl's book--but it is far inferior to the original film, which is clever and inventive and utterly unpredictable. And the ending, until the moment when they meet up with Christopher Lee (by far the best thing about this movie), is surprisingly mean-spirited, not in a Dahlian but in a sleazy way. I ended up giving it a 3, whatever that means.

6/10. It honestly has a good imagination, but it's just too weird.

Maybe I rated this too high now that I've read what others think 6/10, but I like the Gene Wilder version better.

7/10 Decent remake. I had fun with it as a kid and while Depp may not have been the perfrct choice to play Wonka, he was still enjoyable as he always is in his roles.
