Yesterday someone on the Film General board posted a link to a revised list of the 1000 best films of all time. www.theyshootpictures.com/gf1000_all1000films_table.phpThese are the top 10: Citizen Kane Vertigo 2001 The Rules of the Game Tokyo Story 8 1/2 The Godfather Sunrise The Searchers Seven Samurai The only one of those that I hadn’t seen was Sunrise (an F. W. Murnau silent movie from 1927), so I figured that would be a good pick for a movie to watch in the evening. It was OK, but if I had gone into it blindly without knowing beforehand that it is so well-regarded, I would have never guessed it. The story is about a couple who used to be happy but are now practically strangers. He has a lover who wants him to run away with her. He is tempted to, but ends up rediscovering the love for his wife. The beginning and the end are very dramatic and visually striking, but the entire middle section is of a more comedic tone and felt like filler. It was worth it more as a historical curiosity than as a movie standing on its own two feet. I've only seen the Godfather and I wasn't a fan
Was that list made in 1977?
Never heard of a majority of those movies

Having a rough idea of your taste in movies by now, I think the only one that you might enjoy from those is Vertigo, which is a Hitchcock movie in case you don't know. Maybe Seven Samurai, but I doubt it. It has action and sword fights, but it’s in Japanese, black and white, and three hours long.

I've only seen it once, and it was probably about 10 years ago at this point but I absolutely loved Sunrise. I was amazed at how technically advanced it was for 1927 while being in the service of an otherwise small, character driven, dramatic story. There's that amazing rear projection tracking shot that moves pretty seamlessly between two environments as the characters in another world with each because their focus is so much just on one another that they see a beautiful landscape while walking through traffic. I may have some details wrong but for me that's one of the most memorable images in all of cinema. Although the protagonist's shifts in his attitude toward the female character is pretty drastic. It's the first Oscar winner for best picture, alongside Wings as the 'other' best picture winner, if I recall correctly.

Finally saw Uncut Gems (2019). The Safdies seem like a 21st century son of David Mamet - - it's got the DNA of American Buffalo for sure. Loved Eric Begosian; loved John Amos playing himself for five seconds. Not sure if I like Good Time or this more (I think this, but then again, I just saw it), but they interest me as directors.
I say I like gambling, but the type of gambling in that movie gives me hives. Even watching it in something fictional made me anxious.

The tracking shots, the soft focus, forced perspective. And the near absence of intertitles. It won the one and only Academy Award for "Best Unique and Artistic Picture", kind of a 2nd Best Picture Oscar. Sunrise was far superior to Wings, IMO. One of the last great silents.

Yeah I thought it was very well made, I just didn't enjoy myself watching it because it had no likable characters. You saw the end coming a mile away. There was really only one way his story was going to end.

There was really only one way his story was going to end. I actually thought that the girlfriend was going to be robbed and/or killed and he was going to have to just start hustling immediately again - - a non-stop pushing the boulder up the mountain. Agree with you about all the unlikable characters, though. That gets said for other stories, but it really applied here.

That was a very weird zombie movie that didn't know what it wanted to be. It didn't work as horror and didn't work as comedy either.

I've got 8 minutes left - this could possibly be the worst movie I ever saw - and I sat through it all
Great cast - but what a bomb

This is the second movie you've called the worst movie ever in a couple of days.

Old School Tales From the Crypt episodes
Had hopes the new Creepshow TV series would be a little better and more like TFTC
Demi Moore episode - Dead Right - woman marries an obese homely man (Jeffery Tambor is great in the role) thinking she's marrying into money

Mank last night. Classy and first rate production that somewhat ironically has a bit of a messy script. It might have benefitted from a little more focus and I'm not sure how true all the political elements are. I believe the sentiments are true, but some of those details seem a little too applicable to today, although I believe the script had been written a long time ago as Fincher's father is the only credited writer and he died in 2003. The fact that he's the only credited writer might be more of a tribute to the story than it is true though.
Still it's a beautiful looking, and you can tell there was extreme care put into making the film look as authentic as possible. It's really made to look like it could have been made in the 40s. That hardly ever looks right, and yet this movie really pulls it off. There's great dialogue and really good performances. There's a lot to like. But it didn't fully connect with me the way I'd hoped it would.
This morning I watched The Ghosts of War. New Netflix World War II haunted house kinda thing. It's not great, but it's also not as shitty as it sounds. Theybsoent some money on this and the cast is perfectly adequate. There's some really cheap looking bullshit in the horror genre but this not one of those, so it's better than I expected without being particularly memorable.
Stupid twist though.

Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise
A bit of a letdown from the classic but still watchable
It was always a headscratcher to me how 'Roj' (Roger) was the main antagonist in the Alpha-Betas
He didn't look like Alpha-Beta material to me
He was definitely no Stan Gable
