My four cents on The Host and on the subject of subtitled movies:
I enjoyed The Host when it came out. If I remember correctly, it was one of the first Korean movies to be shown in commercial theatres here (as opposed to film festivals or repertory theatres). The director is Bong Joon-Ho, who also made Memories of Murder, Mother, Snowpiercer and of course the Oscar-winning Parasite.
As for subtitled movies: twenty years ago I would have jumped in rage at anyone who would say "I don't like subtitles". I would have called them all sorts of names and not too subtly insulted their intelligence. Today I've mellowed out. If you don't want to watch movies with subtitles, that is your prerogative (and your problem). Personally, I can't imagine limiting myself to movies and TV shows from a very small number of countries, but to each their own.
I honestly just find dubbed movies inordinately more distracting than anything with subtitles. I should re-visit The Host, I haven't seen it since it came out. Parasite, man that movie is special. Just a great film from start to finish. Snowpiercer I really enjoyed when I first saw it, but it lost a bit of luster upon rewatch. It's solid, and delightfully offbeat, it just loses a bit of steam in the third act for me. I haven't seen Memories of Murder, nor have I seen Okja, which I understand to be rather good, but not his best.
I can't stand dubbing. Even animated movies from Japan I'd much rather watch with subtitles than dubbed.
I remember little about Memories of Murder - I couldn't even give you a plot summary beyond "it's about a murder investigation in a small town" - but I do remember being very positively impressed by it.
Completely agree about Parasite!

I'll watch it when you watch Brotherhood of the Wolf! I still have to watch The Skin I Live In.Β I still gotta get on Under the Skin. Ever hear of In My Skin? That one's fucked up.

Parasite and Snowpiercer may touch on similar themes, but they are wildly different films. There are shared attitudes, to a degree, but Snowpiercer is meant to be an odd and in-your-face genre film. It's absurdist on purpose and it never pretends to be subtle. I found it entertaining and audacious but I don't think it's a masterwork or anything. Parasite, on the other hand, is just terrific in everything it attempts to do. It's not nearly as heavy handed as you think, and it approaches these ideas very differently and it doesn't judge it's characters in the way you'd expect based on his previous work. Really good stuff. I'll watch it when you watch Brotherhood of the Wolf! I will when I can find it...

I still have to watch The Skin I Live In. I still gotta get on Under the Skin. Ever hear of In My Skin? That one's fucked up. I haven't seen that one, but looks like a solid entry into the "Skin" trilogy! Ever watch Swallow? Not quite as graphic, but still has some seriously squirmy moments.

Frank of Ireland - Irish sitcom written by and starring Brendan Gleesonβs sons. Ep. 1 was on Channel 4 here tonight. A few funny moments but I was slightly disappointed overall. Relies too much on crudIty.

Loved part 1 of the new documentary series on Bent Coppers in London in the 70s.
Really compelling. Made me feel nostalgic for the era!

Got a new DVD to watch tonight... It can't be worse than Altered, can it? Archaeologists dig up some ancient evil. That kind of thing.

Can't be worse than my last two charity shop horror movie finds. I refuse to believe that. They were two of the worst films I have ever sat through. Up there with the zombie rape van movie π¬

I fell asleep listening to the football last night, it was that exciting π΄ So I still have 'Dead Souls' to look forward to as a Saturday evening 'treat'... Aren't I lucky. Will let you know what I think after I've seen it.
