I'm going to have what I'm calling 'Second Chance Saturday' later tonight.
I watched 'Chernobyl Diaries' years ago, and I wasn't impressed.
Can't remember too much about it to be honest... The Hills Have Eyes derivative type of thing.
I'm going to give the DVD a fresh spin with an open mind later, and see what I think now.

i watched the first episode of Hunters, the Al Pacino Nazi hunters show.
Should I go forward with it? It feels like it exists somewhere in between a more realistic, straight forward drama and something like American Gods. I'm not sure if the tone of the show is going to allow me to get into it.

I wasn’t a fan by the end of the season. The tone does it a true disservice and it gets worse as it goes on. Plus, Pacino is terrible in it.

I probably wouldn’t bother if I were you. maybe just watch the last episode. It’s quite good.

I made it 2 episode. it was the tone that put me off too in the end.

I watched “Hawaii” (1966) and then its sequel “The Hawaiians” (1970). They are based on James Michener’s historical epic “Hawaii”. In the first one Max Von Sydow and Julie Andrews star as a Calvinist missionary and his wife sent to Hawaii to bring the word of God to the heathens, at a time when native Hawaiians were still masters in their own land (but not for long).
While watching it I wasn’t enjoying it all that much, but after finishing it, thinking about it a little more and reading reviews, my rating improved to a more respectable 7.
The second one takes place a few decades later. Charlton Heston is a former sea captain cut off from his wealthy grandfather’s will who struggles to set up a farm. He employs a couple of Chinese immigrants who have their own drama. Most of the movie is about the intertwined stories of those two families, but then near the end the focus abruptly changes to politics and the attempts by the Americans to overthrow the Hawaiian monarchy and annex the islands. I haven’t read the book but I imagine the story is better developed on paper.

I finished watching S2 of Britannia last night, for the third time, and it only came out last year! I am a tad obsessed. I've now decided that it's just as good as the first. It got me as well, Nogbad. Brilliantly cast. Can't wait for S03

Still not a big fan after giving Chernobyl Diaries a fair go for second chance Saturday. Could have been handled really creepily, the old abandoned Pripyat and all that, but goes down the quiet quiet BANG! road instead. Highlight - the small child just stood there in the dark.

I just found out that Britannia is available on Sonyliv in India and I have a subscription to it so I can actually watch it. So what kind of TV series is it? serious/fantasy/comedy? How would you compare it with Spartacus?

Alain Renais's Muriel from 1963.
Don't think I've seen so many edits in one movie! Certainly an interesting technique.
Quite enjoyed the film about an old wartime lover of Delphine Seyrig coming to visit her in home in Boulogne.
Seyrig is terrific and I loved all the location filming in Boulogne. Not a really picturesque town but an interesting one.
I liked it better than Last Year at Marienbad but not as much as Hiroshima, Mon Amour.

Think I'll give up on Godard completely.
Watched his "Oh, woe is me" on Mubi. Meh. Very confusing. Probably my least favourite to date of his movies.

How would you compare it with Spartacus? Historical Fantasy with conquering Roman legions, Druids, other indigenous tribes fighting with one another and exploiting/being exploited by the Romans, a wandering mystic/wizard (think Merlin without Arthur)who is tasked with looking after the next queen (Boudeca?). Roman general dabbling in the occult, two Druid high priests squaring off against one another and many other subplots. The cast is awesome led by David Morrisey and includes Scandinavian superstar Nikolaj Lie Kaas on top form, as the mystic Divis and he is well matched by the teenager (at least she was when the show started) Eleanor Worthington Cox as Cait the heroine-to-be. Everybody has a ball and there are lots of weird tattoos and bodypaints. Not as grim/serious as Spartacus. It doesn't have Kirk Douglas making faces, thank god. Great fun but not a comedy. There is quite a bit of tension in it.

I think aj_june may have been referring to the Spartacus TV series shown on Starz, rather than the Kirk Douglas movie. I haven't seen Britannia (though I do have Now TV so could watch it) so I can't comment.

Wanted to see if anybody had some recommendations. Watching Ozark right now and love the atmosphere. Love movies/shows based in the Deep South - i.e. Louisiana / Swamp Culture. Shows like True Detective Season 1,movie - The Gift (Katie Holmes, Greg Kinnear, Cate Blanchett, Keannu Reeves movie), Doc Hollywood - i.e. about small little Southern close knit towns. Any recs would be appreciated.
*** Edit - and yes - I get the Ozarks aren't exactly in the Deep South - but I get a whole Louisiana vibe watching this - on Episode 5 right now.
