Saturday night, I watched The Hunt (2020), a movie that apparently generated controversy over the fact that the opening of the movie discusses liberals hunting down and murdering "deplorables." Honestly, I don't really get it, as the movie properly skewers followers of both sides of the aisle fairly mercilessly.....and hilariously. This movie was an absolute blast, with surprisingly well-staged and shot action sequences, a great balance of tongue-in-cheek humor (it approaches Zucker Brothers-esque moments at times) and biting satire, coupled with a star-making performance. I don't want to spoil it, but the first act had this really interesting narrative device that I can't say I've seen employed all that much, and certainly not this effectively. Plus, Betty Gilpin, a TV actress that I can't say I've really heard of, is phenomenal. Her performance is so much fun and she breathes so much life into the film that it's impossible not to actively root for her. Gory, funny and at a crisp 90 minutes, it knows exactly what it is and it's all the better for it.

Yeah I was on the fence when it was first released because I'm tired of overt political commentary in film, but I appreciate that it doesn't take a side. I'll have to check it out at some point.

I'm with you and I avoided this one previously for that reason. A friend of mine watched it, knowing my preferences and he recommended it after the fact.

Call me by your Name. A film from a couple of years ago that received a few Oscar nominations. Timothy Chalamet and Arnie Hammer have a brief gay fling in rural Lombardy.
Italy looked great but the film was pretty dull to be honest. Overlong too. No gratuitous bumming scenes thankfully!

All eight episodes of s2 of My Brilliant Friend are now available on Now TV and Sky.
Could really have done with a recap of s1 as I’d forgotten a lot of what happened in that season. It was two years ago after all.

Watched The Swimmer for the first time starring Burt Lancaster and his little, tight pair of swimming trunks as his entire wardrobe. (One day I'll be in as good a shape as him.) Excellent role for Burt, and as the movie progresses it becomes clear his sunny and positive personality isn't what it seems. A simple plot sees Lancaster wanting to swim and 'portage' home pool by pool through neighbours' country estates. We don't know anything about him but his talks with people he meets along the way reveals who he is.
See if you can pick out Joan Rivers with her real face. The brunette at the first pool, actress Marge Champion was born in 1919 and is still alive! She also happens to be Katey Sagal's stepmother.
A mention of Toronto (yay) near the end as well as the mixing of a drink I've never heard of: a bull shot. Had to look it up, the ingredients are vodka, beef bouillon (chilled consomme), lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce (Tabasco). I think I might like that.
Not sure how I've missed seeing it over the years but this will have to squeeze into my fave 1968 movies list somehow.
1-- 2001: ASO 2-10.....?
Once Upon A Time In The West Rosemary's Baby Planet Of The Apes Night Of The Living Dead Chitty Chitty Bang Bang The Odd Couple The Lion In Winter Hour Of The Wolf Shame Stolen Kisses The Swimmer The Bride Wore Black The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter Pretty Poison Goke, Body Snatcher From Hell (also a recent first time watch) The Fixer

I’d give it 7.5/10. Thanks for the tip about YT.

I watched “Stalag 17” (1953), the Billy Wilder WWII POW drama/comedy. First time watch. I am a big fan of Billy Wilder but didn’t like this one very much. The humour just didn’t work at all for me. Rarely have I disliked a character in a movie as much as “Animal”, who is supposed to be comic relief but was painfully unfunny.

Go figure...

I went on moviechat (a site that has the old IMDb boards archived) to check the discussions about Stalag 17 and I came across some posts from Squeeth, remember him? Somebody had written something about how terribly the Soviets had treated their POWs and Squeeth, good little communist that he was, took offense.

I think this is him: I can see how he would get annoying after a while.

He turned up briefly on this board a few months back. His avatar is the best I’ve seen. The lemon.
