terminator: dark fate awesome beginning with the CGI - with a shocker in Arnold killing John Conner (Edward Furlong) - never knew this apparently takes place after T2 and they disregard all the other movies - hence John Conner (Furlong) getting killed in the opening scene.
that being said i'm about 15 minutes past the opening - and this is everything we've seen before - don't know if i'll stick with it

while watching Terminator: Dark Fate
one thing i've noticed
Linda Hamilton is an absolutely atrocious actress
i think we hold these films so close to our hearts because they remind us of our childhood - but by God - she is cringeworthy - every line delivered over the top like she's constipated - reminds me of the actress who plays Micchone (sp?) on The Walking Dead

The Diamond Arm (1969) - a comedy masterpiece from Soviet Union - it is one hell of a laugh riot. Rated 8.5 on IMDB.

I'm two episodes in to the four episode documentary on Oscar Pistorius, Pistorius (2018). He and Lance Armstrong make for an interesting double feature.

It's free on my cable package.
4 eps.
I'm in.
I love tragic human interest sports stories.

Tremendous.
Highly recommend this to everybody here.

I've started watching S4 of The Last Kingdom again, for the second time in three months, if that. I think I'm enjoying it more second time around, my expectations of the few tv shows I really love always tend to be a bit high. On a side note, the more torn-faced Ælswith gets, the more I want to comfort* her. * this may be a euphemism Remind me which one is Aelswith? Alfred's widow?

We watched The Old Guard last week, a Netflix original. I was surprised my wife suggested it; perhaps she was fooled by the presence of Charlize Theron. Anyhoo it has the kind of premise that sounds intriguing, but you know can go wrong in a thousand different ways. For lack of a better option at the time, we went for it. It was not good. Maybe not as terrible as I expected. Still, not good. Some of the action was alright, but it was filled with plot holes and relatively weak world building I would've come up with if I was writing the script at age 15. As I said, the film does have an interesting premise, even if the story itself makes no sense whatsoever. "We're a group of immortal warriors who don't want to be seen, so we do mercenary work for intelligence agencies. It's not like they have a million cameras on everything or keep copious records. They'll never figure it out."
Apparently it's based on a comic book series I have not read, so I can't say what was added or lost in translation; though the technopop soundtrack was distracting to say the least. Possibly the strangest scene in the film was the one featuring the two gay characters making out in front of their captors for no apparent reason. It was the kind of, I don't know, 'gratuitous gayness' that maybe existed in film 20 years ago if you were trying to be 'edgy,' but I feel like today's audiences (at least for the most part) don't find homosexuality all that shocking. I suppose it deserves credit for having openly gay badass characters, but that scene was awkward and cringeworthy for reasons other than what the creative team intended, I think.
The biggest flaw in the film is the pharmaceutical CEO as the big bad. The actor (apparently of Harry Potter fame) looks like a walking cartoon character, hardly worthy of these warriors best efforts. Just a goofy looking guy and not particularly menacing or cleverly written. They say an action movie is only as good as the villain, well...

A quick post about something I didn't watch. Hamilton. It came to Disney+ so we gave it a go. Couldn't get into it. To be fair, musical theater is not my cup of tea to begin with. But a friend of mine suggested I check it out due to my appreciation of history. I got about ten minutes in and couldn't take any more. Honestly I don't understand the appeal. If you like history, I don't see how you could get into this manic misrepresentation of it; and I would think the enjoyment of musicals came from the singalong aspect of the presentation? The songs aren't catchy, quotable or doable as karaoke or whatever the appeal of musicals usually is, so I don't see why musical fans would enjoy it, either. But again, mine is clearly not the perspective to get on musicals to begin with.
I'm not against it as a concept; I'm glad something so unusual has fans, for the sake of art itself. It's just not for me. I'm sure it has its moments that even I could enjoy, but I'm not willing to sit through two and a half hours to find them.

I love history and I love theater but I HATE musical theater. That and country music are probably the two things on this earth that I truly hate with vehement passion. It's irrational, I have no basis for it, but it sends me into such a blind rage that it's best for me to avoid it altogether.

Just because he wasn't physically menacing it didn't make him a less interesting villain in a "Dr. Evil" sort of way.

It was a blind buy years ago for $4.99 - love Depp, love horror - I had no clue it was a musical.
I gave it 2 minutes years upon years ago. Noticed it was free on my cable package the other day.
Tried it again. This time I didn't make it to the 2 minute mark.

The Chiwetel Ejiofor character made no sense at all. "I did some research and found out you've probably saved the human race ten times over. So I decided to sell you out anyway."

Never seen the movie, but you'd have to pay me $4.99 just to watch the trailer ever again.
