It's a reasonable prediction for the summer but I don't see Captain Underpants doing well. It seems wayyy too late. Don't forget though, the reason why family movies do well at the box office has nothing to do with quality, or even popularity really. Its because the average family is about 5 people large (2 parents 3 kids), as opposed to the "couples" that usually go see other types of movies. Something like Star Wars is a movie that attracts every size/type crowd. I agree. Captain Underpants release is great to catch the early summer crowd. It's trailers are super silly. My youngest really is looking forward to it. I have no idea what the budget is, but if it is reasonable, it will do just fine.

Dunkirk mild success? It's gonna be the biggest hit of the summer. And damn, that film is supposed to be hella expensive. Dunkirk is supposed to have very little dialog because Chris Nolan wants the focus of the film to be on the visuals and sound effects. Therefore it's a gimmick. And I doubt that it will work unless the audience finds visual effects and sound effects in war movies the most appealing aspect. I think it will do well during the opening weekend but then sales will drop sharply once people realise the gimmick.

top summer movies (quick list)
DM3 Guardian of the Galaxy Spider-Man HC Wonder Woman Cars 3 Mummy POTC Transformers Baywatch (sleeper hit) War for the planet of the apes
Bold Prediction: Dunkirk does not make the top 10 summer movies for box office. The Mummy surprises and gets possible in the top 5 of the summer box office.

If the movie is suspenseful throughout and keeps everyone biting nails, I'm sure people won't mind.

I think Valerian is gonna be DOA. I believe sleepers could be: It Comes At Night (very intriguing trailer, looks to be solid counterprogramming as well with few good looking horror movies on the summer schedule come June 9th, just needs good reviews) All Eyez on Me (Tupac/rap fans will eat this up) The House (well-known comedy stalwarts in Poehler and Farrell). ^^^ Agree with ya . I am very intrigued with It Comes At Night. Joel Edgerton is on a hot streak and has been picking really good projects lately so I am rooting for this film to deliver and I also think it could be a sleeper hit. Valerian is gonna flop so hard hahaha. Some folks are sadly gonna get fired for that . After learning that The Mummy budget is only 125 million , this shit will make a profit for sure and be a decent sized hit .

Well, Mad Max Fury Road and Castaway are two movies that are good examples of the kind of "gimmick" you're describing, and they turned out very well and were successful.
Plus, if you think movies are about dialogue then you are mistaken. The story in movies is told through visuals. I would be perfectly willing to watch a movie with little dialog if it meant the story was told effectively without it and was still good. If anyone can pull it off it's Christopher Nolan.
However, I agree that people will be turned off. People demand new ideas and innovation and then when they're given that they whine.

Which do you think will live up to the hype, which do you think will flop, and what range $$$ do you think they might make? Here's a list and my guesses. And I threw in a few that might not necessarily be on our radar, but can potentially be big hits.
EDIT: 6-13-17 NOW THAT WE'RE IN FULL SWING LETS COMPARE NOTES...
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 Biggest hit of the summer, 500 mill (STILL GOING) King Arthur Legend of the Sword flop Alien Covenant FLOP Pirates of the Caribbean 5 FLOP IN THE U.S. BUT DOING WELL ABROAD Baywatch FLOP Wonder Woman Moderate hit, 300 mil (STILL GOING) The Mummy FLOP Captain Underpants MODERATE
Cars 3 Pixar sequel and still huge with kids, so... Transformers 5 Again who knows? This SHOULD flop, but the last one did well, so... Despicable Me 3 Biggest animated hit of the summer 300-400 mill? Spider Man Homecoming re-boot fatigue may bring this down from the success it could be, 250 Mill? Planet of the Apes 3 Moderate hit 100-200 mill? Valerian OUCH, I want this to succeed, but I think this is going to be the biggest flop Dunkirk mild success, 100 mill Atomic Blonde minor sleeper hit under 100 mill Dark Tower summer exhaustion 100 mill
What do you think?

I was so off on alien covenant, which makes me depressed. My bias wanted that to be the biggest film of the year lol

REVISITING THE LIST NOW THAT THE SUMMERS OVER Lot of carnage. Tell me about it. But there were some bright spots: The Big Sick was actually very good and did okay for itself; Dunkirk gave Nolan another hit though not as big as some of his others; Wonder Woman did better than even I expected and I had already high hopes for it; Spiderman was solid; War for the Planet of the Apes was solid, I actually hope that franchise continues somehow; It wasn't the best summer, but it wasn't the worst.

For sure. Just because the summer didn't do big numbers doesn't mean that there wasn't good movies, unlike last year. -I too loved The Big Sick -Dunkirk was okay imo but definitely worth a theater view -Was disappointed in GOTG2 -Actually enjoyed King Arthur: Legend of the Sword -Baby Driver was a pretty wild ride -War for the Planet of the Apes was a great cap to an awesome trilogy -Spider Man: Homecoming was really refreshing -Annabelle: Creation apparently is a surprise -It Comes at Night was mismarketed but far from a bad movie. Actually kind of compelling. -Wonder Woman is a positive WB can hang their hat on. -Logan Lucky is carrying stellar reviews. -Atomic Blonde was a stylistically cool action movie. -Girls Trip could lay claim to being the biggest surprise of the entire blockbuster season.

REVISITING THE LIST NOW THAT THE SUMMERS OVER Not as bad a summer as 2016. 2016 had some pretty big disappointments.
