Has anyone else seen it?
I just viewed Gifted, and I feel that the movie proves poor. It is mechanical and trite, and the narrative over the course of the second half makes no sense. The thematic exploration and conclusions range from banal to cheap to lazy to simplistic. The movie eventually becomes too much of a hackneyed, overwrought courtroom drama, after which the film cruises through pivotal moments with bluegrass accompaniment on the soundtrack. At one hour and forty-one minutes, the movie feels like two hours and forty-one minutes. The wide-screen aspect ratio mainly serves to promote closeups, with virtually no sense of composition whatsoever. The romance is utterly predictable (if amusing at one point), and the romantic conclusion is cringe-worthy in its cliched nature. The acting is decent for the most part, but not to the point of salvaging this stilted dramatic exercise utterly lacking in directorial perspective. During the first half, the movie is at least intimate, but that intimacy declines as the courtroom scenes take over.
In short, Gifted reduces intriguing subject matter to tiresome melodrama and simplistic resolution.

So what was expected based on the preview. ... never saw it. I suppose that from reading the synopsis, I imagined that the film might have been more intellectual, more of a serious exploration rather than using some of the paradoxes of childhood genius to essentially create your typical custodial melodrama/courtroom battle/romance.

Also, since Gifted came to my local art house/independent theater (in addition to a couple of the big commercial chains), I sort of assumed that it might be somewhat sophisticated. Obviously, I made a mistake; the movie is pure Hollywood hokum.
