I was thinking of him in Superman yesterday when he tells the council--"neither my wife nor I will attempt to leave Krypton."
He may have been sleepwalking through it, but it was an effective performance and provided some emotional peaks.
Lucky he didn't try to camp it up.

It saddens me that most episodes of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson that were taped in New York were erased, but this was a real treat to watch.
