I’ve always been curious about how people perceive the idea of an unidentified killer lurking around their neighborhood. Don’t want to sound like something that could only happen in a movie. Here’s a real-life news of an arrest that caught my attention (the case was also featured in this forum before): In March 2019, an arrest was made in the 43-year-old slaying of a camping Wisconsin couple. David Schuldes, 25, and Ellen Matheys, 24 were shot to death in 1976 at McClintock Park in Silver Cliff. Ellen was also raped. On March 14th, the Marinette Co. Sheriff's Department said they arrested 82-year-old Raymond L. Vannieuwenhoven in Lakewood, a northern Wisconsin town, after a DNA sample matched him to the semen taken from Ellen’s shorts. The match was obtained via GEDmatch (the technology that helped capture the Golden State Killer). The suspect, Ray Vannieuwenhoven, was a widower and the father of five grown children. Known around the area as “old Ray,” he was an affable neighbor and a handyman. Vannieuwenhoven had lived quietly for two decades among the 800 residents of Lakewood. For nearly 43 years, he had lived in plain sight, yet outside detectives’ radar. I recently opened a true crime blog that researches unsolved murders whose killers I believe are still lurking around the same area today. It features both recent cases like the double murder of David Metzler and Heidi Childs, and the (also) double murder of Brandon Rumbaugh and Lisa Gurrieri, and decades-old cases like the Honolulu Strangler. I’m looking forward to hearing what people think about the possibility of a killer living next door. Please feel free to take a look at my blog and share around: www.anniethin.com/post/blog-post-3What are some cases like this one (the double murder of David Schuldes and Ellen Matheys) that is so heinous in nature that the idea of the killer lurking around is just unfathomable?
