The movie is pretty dull overall...

I'll agree.
It fits into the mode of Ransom, Taken, The Descent, the remake of Night of the Living Dead, in its self righteous arrogance and feeding the demon that makes people think they have the right to just go out and play God, and whatever they decide is "righteous", no matter what the facts are.
As far as Tarantino goes, with the comments about him, I'll give him a one up on most other directors, because Tarantino at least pokes fun of the very arrogance he makes stories out of. He actually makes fun of the Beavis and Butthead people who think those kind of one dimensional characters are "cool".

I liked it a lot. It was pretty brutal (not something that bothers me, but a criticism I could understand), but not overly so. Some of the vignettes didn't resonate with me, but they all moved so quickly, even the ones I didn't care for didn't overstay their welcome. Probably my favorite film headed by Robert Rodriguez. Some of the visuals were very interesting...thinking of Clive Owen sinking in the tar pit...
Nick Stahl's "yellow bastard" was quite disgusting. I mean, I know that was the point, but still...gave me a shiver.
