I just hope those posts are not taken to reflect the feelings of Christianity in general. I don't know how many Christians do feel that way overall, I'm sure it is a good sized and admittedly vocal group. I still interact with both you and Ned; people of simple faith and humane concern are okay in my book. That other poster is not. And I have had way too many of his kind in my life. Those types are more about controlling others, not helping others. I just went through the book of Job. I honestly don't know if it is a factual account of what happened to a man or a fable written by an author sometime in antiquity. But either way it deals with the trials a person can go through. It centers on characters that look on others in their suffering as they try to figure out what others did wrong to deserve their trials and why God was punishing Job. It then goes to explain that Job did nothing wrong and pain and trials in this complex universe are not punishments from God. I like that book, moreso than many books in the old testament that center on some God that is running around picking people to bless and others to smite all the time. It shows why we need to be more compassionate in other's suffering and less judgemental.

The Buddha I'm not religious, (secular humanist) but lessening the suffering of others is my ongoing pursuit in this world. Like Ned, this includes animals as well. Growing up in a Southern Baptist church, I saw a lot of judgement and very little compassion. The cognitive dissonance could not be overcome.

Many Christians see the message of Christ, and how he wanted to carry his message through those who followed him, as one of great compassion. I hope as many people as possible, regardless of their religious beliefs, can spread that message and practice compassion.
