Doc Hollywood (1991)--Much more on the lighter side than the others listed, but it still has a great message about doctors who focus on the human side of medicine. Michael J. Fox at his most charming. Love this film, a real cure for the blues - putting it in now - I'm in The Twilight Zone!

Hospitals have always been morbid, sometimes menacing, places for me .... So were I a gifted director, I would probably make something like: Riget [The Kingdom] (TV series 1994-1997) dir: Lars von Trier "The Kingdom" is an intelligent and genuinely creepy supernatural thriller. Imagine a cross between "Twin Peaks" and "ER," and you'll have some idea of where the helmers go in setting up the nightmarish confrontation between arrogant science and the aggrieved spirit world. Bungled operations, blood-gushing corridors, masonic conspiracy, and Haitian voodoo all come into play, and the effect is riveting horror cinema at its best. [John Farr]
