Hard to say. He didn’t get to show his acting range that often (but, then, watch something like Private Detective 62, where he goes hardboiled, or the subtle differences between Nick Charles and Philo Vance), but is range the be-all and end-all of acting quality?
It’s between good and great, and leaning heavily towards great. His persona was delightful, and seemingly effortless (which means it must have taken a lot of work).

Yes - one of the greatest of Hollywood comic actors (My Man Godfrey, Libeled Lady, The Thin Man, Life wth Father) but he could also shine in dramatic roles (One Way Passage is lovely). Wonderful final role in Mister Roberts, too.

His comedic timing and quick wit were second to none.
